brokerage firms have to choose between the old ways of making money or walking the stialgbt and narrow path larger places have their advant- agesbut one never hears of a village council having to turn its unemploy ed on the street to shovel snow al though we must admit it wouldnt hurt the street at all some mornings everyone is agreed that the present winter has been a pretty stiff one in these parts but the opinion prevails that we will have an early spring and the presence of robblns is strengthening this be lief m m m we read of a plant that can scrap an automobile in six minutes harry klinck says that with wall dlreted cooperation a telephone pole can beat that reeve herman kidd of whitchurch was one of the chosen few at county council last week to be placed on the striking committee a body of men whose duty it is to select the various committees of the year and their selection is usually approved by the whole council we are glad to see tho reeve of whitchurch thus honored v chronic fatigue of school child ren has become one of the problems fading this strenuous age school children of today are set too fast a pace with all the organizations for children under the auspices ot churches schools and other welfare societies we feel that many of them with the best of motives have little or no understanding or sympathy with the delicate makeup of a childs nervous system or physique and so they plan social events charitable benefits and endles meet ings which each and all urge the child to unnecessarily deplete its strength at time when he should be building up reserve force for the struggles of later life parents are largely to blame for the condition that has developed the average woman and man of today is so busy working for organizations outside the home that some other organlza- tin has to look after his family and so the mad whirl goes on the need today is less community life and more of good old fashioned home lite special val some of our special caiie retires after 20 yi housing meeting when v p mulock is nominated morgan baker new lib- election i am the candidate for pr a i prvsinent this ridlngand not my grandfather bkat j su jandwatea were nomimued ror of north york riding howard north york but all withdrew in favor of mr mulock they were hairy slftou harry naughton mor gan uaker wesley conn and dr oarucl macleau l tho close of the convention olllecra of the north york liberal association were elected as follows president morgan baker secretary j harry naughton and treasurer thomas h trench howard cane retiring president iecalled that he had served the association for 20 years and said tie believed 11 was time he surren dered the ofllco to someone else hon mr malcolm drew a laugh from hi audience when he describ ed toronto as tho most dllllcult city in the world to understand it did not even understand itself he de clared it was the most liberalmind ed city in the world yet it kept on votiug conservative toronto is he remarked just what all the rest of ontario votes liberal major sanderson deprecated what he called the boosting done by our conservative friends after the election of 1325 he pointed out 12 liberals had been elected and sent to ottawa eleven months after an other federal election was held at that time the conservatives said they would concede their liberal friends six seats in this they were shown to be false prophots because in this election of 1926 the liberals had not only held every one of their 12 seats but had added 14 to them to make 26 victory a boomerang that the great victory of tho con servatives in the last provincial elec tion was likely to bo a boomerang eventually that would injure the ferguson government was the belief of the liberal whip canadas present prosperity was in a large measure due to the team work between the governed and the governing under tho liberal administration hon james malcolm minister of trade and commerce told some 500- delegates to the north york liberal convention at newmarket on wednesday last week hon james malcolms address followed the conventions unanimous nomination ot fwilllam pate mulock as candidate for this federal riding of north yotk high praise of the newly appointed candidate was voiced by the minister i believe mr mulock has that in his nature which will make him one of the best representatives this riding has ever had he declared no one could say that the progress ot the canadian people during the past seven years had not been spectacular hon mr malcom pointed out all figures had pointed in one direction that ot a prosperous and united canada i think the greatest tribute that can be paid the present leader ot the liberal government is the harmony that prevails throughout canada he said internal problems canada owing to its extent was a country ot many interests and internal problems were bound to occur the minister declared for a government to have solved these problems wisely and generously as they have been solved under the king government and at the same time to have reduced taxes and the national debt was a triumph referring to the tariffs mr malcolm said the liberal admini stration had neither advocated a high tariff a low tariff nor free trade it toad merely used the tariff to the best of its knowledge as an economic instrument for the welfare of the country its use ot it had made for the greatest industrial growth this country has ever known the minister said he had been told that canada was importing too many manufactured goods such a criti cism he believed was a mistaken one a great many of these products referred to as manufactured goods were brought into the country for resale or further manufacture he quoted lumber silk and automo bile parts as examples of the thing he referred to lumber usually went to a factory and was made into furniture silk went to the garment factories and was made into cloth ing and automobile parts went to assembling plants and were made into motor cars umpire trade ill take second place to no man in canada in my belief that canadas prosperity lies in the expansion of trade within the empire mr malcolm declared in my department no opportunity has been overlooked to increase that trade at every point it b bennett in advocating a commission to look into tho matter of preference for empire goods was merely paying a compliment to the work already done by the liberal government he said many people criticised the govern ment for what they claimed to be a falling off in the dairy industry in canada this past few years mr mal colm declared the country had not been producing enough butter to supply its own demands but he was of the opinion that it was not up to a government to tell the farmer how he must sell his produce he must sell it for the best price he could get and if he found it more profitable to sell to the toronto dairies for table use or for the manufacture of ice cream that was his own business milk production in canada had steadily increased but because other uses had been made of the milk the butter manufacture had remained about the same it was entirely wrong to say that the dairy industry had been ruined ho insisted mr bennett had also said that canadians were leaving the country for the united states in large numbers he continued as a matter of fact the migration across the line were almost equally balanced on the side of both countries last year there was only a difference of 82 between the number of canadians who had gone to the states and the number of americans who had come hore during the course of his address he doclared the result of the provincial government 1s going to have nothing to do with the domin ion election honors of a political nature bring grave responsibilities said w p mulock in accepting th nomination as candidate for north york one of these is to look after the riding and the other is to poll the liberal vote this is a liberal riding and i believe the reasons it has not representatives at ottawa today is that all the liberals hore have not voted remember they cant beat mackenzie king and they might as well realize it now
