jteeve v uolm of markluuu township c at the recent meeting of the young peoples society of the thorn- hill united church keeve w c colin of markham township gave a very interesting and instructive address on york county in his opening remarks reeve gohu regret ted that the compiling of an adequ ate history of the county has so far been neglected and referred to this as a worthy work which should coimnend itself to someone who had the time and the ability to undertake it the speaker emphasized the great wealth of the county which he point ed out was the richest in the province of ontario and it was re cognized as such even in the early days of the indians he said he traced the progress which had been accomplished since tne days when only indian trails penetrated inland through the heavily timbered areas the main trails were from the number river to the don and north to connect with the holland river and lake simcoe from 17s0 until 1s00 there was a gradual influx of pioneers from england ireland scotland and pennsylvania and other american states soon schools were established and churches of the different denominations which made up the various settlements sprang up the population gradually increas ed and from the pioneers was drawn the militia which defended the town of york from the americans in 1812 during the next quarter century by the perseverance of the settlers the land was cleared homes established and a start made in the construc tion of roads the period was rather troublesome culminating in the re bellion of 1837 after the rebellion came the setting up or organization for the administration of justice and the formation of a district council of fifty one members from four countys the first meeting of the council was held in february 1842 and edward william thompson was the first warden who carried on until 1850 when legislation was enacted to provide for carrying on municipal government as it is today in 1794 began the building of military roads by military lauour the old indian trails that were naturally so crooked were straight ened and necessary bridges built in the year 1s35 saw the beginning of a great industrial activity saw mills grist mills distilleries cooper shops and schools and churches up to this time the canadian government own ed the roads but they were purchas ed in 18c5 by the coumy for the sum of 72500 the cost of the roads was borne by the collection of tolls which was sold to the highest bidder collected on two norse loaded vehicles was 10 ems two irse unloaded vehicle was 7 cents saddle horse was 4c horses or cattle each 2 cents sheep pig or goat each lceut some of these toll gates on vouge street were situated at stop 2c langstaff jefferson aud one be tween holland landing and brad- ford in 1s9c toll gates and market fees were abolished and roads given back to municipalities over thirty years ago the county secured the electric railway which i is the metropolitan rudials wo enjoy today this was the first electric railj way to operate outside a large centre in canada and it proved a great asset to the county of york york county is fast developing in modern improvements particularly in her
