match of the north york association was held on thursday of last week on the farm of anthony hoover at dixon hill although for some time prior to the match it was feared that a postponement would have to be made owing to the hardened condition of the soil through lack of rain but the downpour on tuesday and wednesday prior to the match dispelled any fear of having to hold the match over on this account the danger was that the weather would not be line enough and it wasnt either for ruin fell intermit- ently all day and the ground while plowing well was disagreeable un der foot as a result of the condition of ihe weather the entries fell off considerably from other years there being 2s contestants against 3s on the previous year the crowd of spectators was not so large although a surprisingly good number was on hand under the circumstances the stouffville womens institute conducted a booth at the grounds providing hot lunch for the plowmen and others while in the evening they furnished the hot supper in ratcliffs hall and were highly complimented for the excellent services rendered under trying weather conditions mr 1 r campbell acted as chair man at the banquet when a womens missionary society of victoria square arc having a supper and entertainment in the united church victoria square nov 6th 1929 imrs brodie of toronto will speak and good musical programme will be rendered the announcement not yet gener ally known that mr ac burkholder is to be retired from the manager ship of the local bank of commerce being received with widespread regret by his business associates here it appears that a hank ruling exists that a man may be retired on pension when he reaches a certain age or has rendered so many years service to the institution whether that individual be in the prime of life and service or worn out mr burkholder surely belongs to the first named class he is in his prime and thus his retirement does not meet with the approval of the bank ing community of stouffville while mr burkholder will relen quish active work at the end of this month he will assist the new man ager until the end of the year or longer his successor is mr e m still who had been identified with the commerce at orangeville and london ontario for years back mr still has been in town and has rented the lawson brick residence on church street which is now own ed by thos dale of toronto he will enter his new duties the beginning of next month back in the year 1s8s a c burk holder as a young lad came in from his fathers farm in whitchurch to become a junior clerk in the private bank conducted in stouffville by miller co this was the beginning of what was to be a long and suc cessful career for the young banker this institution was afterwards taken over by miller stark and air burkholder had risen to be senior clerk later this firm gave way to stark williamson thos williamson now of stoultville which ultimately sold to stark barns in jiay 1922 this private banking institution was taken over by the sovereign bank and in 1908 the standard took tnem over throu gh all this manoeuvering mr burk holder was identified with the business and althouen ne has been manager for the chartered banks since they came here he has never made a loan of any sum whatever than has not beeu paid back to the bank this is a marvelous record for any bank manager to hold and we doubt if but very few could boast of it mr burkholder although attaining this splendid record did not accomp lish it by refusing loans for he has extended hundreds of thousands of dollars to the borrowing public and kept his bank in the front line of business at all times his retirement from business life of the community will be a distinct loss and it is freely expressed on the street that the bank will never select a more competent manager or one more acceptable to their customers it is to be hoped that mr burk holder will find something to occupy his time about stouffville so that he and mrs burkrolder may not be lost entirely to the community one of uxbridge townships eldest women mrs mary anna woodland died on sunday last ot the home of her grandson at lot 9 concession 2
