his papers and harold a sanders liberal of stouffville hon g s henry riiade a vigorous defence of the ferguson administra tion and its record after many long years of liberal rule he said the conservatives came into power and during their tenure of office started a forward movement in the development of the resources of the province while the spirit of disr sension and riot prevailed in the other parliamentary groups the conservatives had worked with a united front loyal to its leader and with a clear denned platform he scored the liberal leader with be ing unable to tell the electors what he and his party really stood for of his own department he told how out of a total of 30000000 spent in ontario on road develop ment last year 22 millions had come from tlie province against the remaining eight million from munici palities referring to mr sinclairs charge that the gasoline tax was not legal he challenged the opposition leader to takeit upon himself to make it an issue at law and remedy what he claims to be ultra vires harold a sanders liberal nomi nee outlined the platform of his party and declared himself as being four square behind his leader on the liquor issue he said the liberal policy was to carry out the will of the people and not to make it a political issue he charged the government with repeatedly violat ing its slogan o hydro at cost inasmuch as they were buying power from private interests putting huge profits in their pockets he claimed that the liberals were out for the development of provincial power as laid down by the late sir adam wednes day oct 23rd at 230 pm inter ment at newmarket editor stouffville tribune a serious situation confronts the shippers of whole milk to the city of toronto at the present time owing to the continued dry weather pas tures have been poor and most farm ers have had their cows on winter feed for some time tho western oat crop is a failure the yield of our own coarse grains is below aver age the price of all feeds will be very much higher before two months toronto dealers have refused to in crease the price to us to meet the situation are we going to stand for it are we going to ship milk until the first of june next at less than the cost of production i think not i have written to the officers of the toronto milk producers asso ciation asking them to call the an nual meeting of the association at once and i would urge every shipper to attend that meeting and back up your executive in tlifeir efforts to ob tain a better price there are over one thousand shippers in the county of york if they would speak with one voice i am sure they would be listened to so do not fail to attend the meeting when called j r campbell one result of the dry weather throughout canada during the past year has been a sevioas slulagi of feed for livestock and dairy cattle this has been particularly serious in the west and since at the same time beef prices have ueen high many farmers have been tempted to sell their herds rather than carry them through the winter to offset this the province of saskatchewan has agread to render financial assistance to farmers in bringing in feed in ontario the pinch is being felt by dairymen many of them whose pastures dried up early were forced to start stable feeding very early unfortunately most of them in the toronto area had before these con ditions developed contracted to sell their milk at a certain price they are now asking a higher price but milk distributors have naturally been reluotant to increase wholesale prices when the burden of explain ing to the ultimate consumer would fall upon them a prominent dairyman is quoted by the toronto globe as explain ing the situation thus in the spring of 1929 the sell ing commission of the toronto milk producers association met a com mittee of the toronto distributors and after considerable bargaining agreed to supply milk at the follow ing prices for may june july and august 195 per eightgallon can for september october november and december 1929 and january february march april and may 1930 at a price averaging 220 per- eightgallaii can these prices are for milk of a 325 per cent butter fat test or higher and is for milk delivered at the dairy it was agreed at the time of sale that if any unforeseen and serious situation should arise during the life of this contract adjustment could be made a very serious situation has arisen in the form of a drought of great severity quite unequalled in recent years pastures have dried up and milking cows have to be stabled and are being fed regular winter rations which in tho majority of cases are entirely inade quate to carry the cows through until grass comes again the distributoys have been approached as to new price arrangements but refused to discuss tho question claiming that there is no shortage of milk and they say that as the producers are being paid winter prices they should not complain of feeding winter rations the end can easily be seen by january or february the stocks of feed will bo running low and there will be thousands of cows for sale there will be a real shortage of milk increased milk prices may be in evitable if this is true the milk distributing companies would bo wise to recognize the situation early it is in their interest and in the in terest finally of the canadian con sumer that dairymen should be en couraged to maintain their fine hords intact and to feed them well 3cornered fight jw wlddlfleld of siloam the pro gressive member who was nominated last saturday for north
