year and didnt provide for a permanent increase he was prepared to support the resolu tion tresteo jake alemulleii second ed the motion made by mr nolan and supported it from the start but trustee e a lloyd voted gainst an increase even though it was labelled a bonus he thought teachers were well paid at 1000 and declared that we could get any number to ill such a position although he believed miss weston mr and mrs morley bedford business men gather around banquet t and enjoy evening have as guests toronto and york road commission valuable discussion on our road problem what is to be done with the road way through stouffville this quest ion was exhaustively debated on thursday evening last week by the toronto and york road commission with some thirty of the business men when they foregathered around the banquet table in the mansion house to discuss this longstanding and live issneln this community in brief engineer rose who was among the guests of the evening told the association that within an other two weeks the present road work done last fall would bo repaired where ever it had broken up and then oiled whatever move might be done towards securing a highclass type of road was a matter for consideration by the citizens having in view he extent of their purse although they were assured liberal treatment by the commission the commission arrived in town shortly after six oclock having left the city early in the afternoon on a tour of inspection which lead them into the sand section about vivian and incidentally caused some delay in arriving at their final dest ination hero in the party was the hon geo s henry who represents the ontario government on this board messrs win keith and m gardhouse the two county rep resentatives and d sponce alp and r t millet chairman of the commission who represent the city of toronto after their arrival the gathering soon were seated at the fables and enjoyed a hot chicken dinner which drew loud praises for the style and manner in which it was prepared by airs miller and her assistants in dr ira freel the sloultvillo association have the right man at their head and as toast master on this occasion he conducted the ceremonies of the office without a haw the doctor outlined the purpose of the gathering and then proceeded to call on i lie various speakers reeve ii w sanders proposed the toast to the toronto and york commission stating that he was pleased to welcome them to stouff ville under such social conditions kind especially was he pleased be cause this was the first time so far as he was aware that the com missioners had ever been the guests of any municipality in this manner his council he said had an under standing last year witli the com mission that they would build a good road through stouffvflle and their word on that occasion was all that he thought was required iio then asked the gathering to drink to the health of our guests the hon george s henry member of this riding of east york ably responded to the words of wel come from the reeve lie never for got the problem he said of stouff ville back some 12 years in the days when the first good road was laid that was just recently torn up r p coulson was reeve he recalled the difficulty that confronted the town and commission about the logs in the etast end and the same road and many of the same logs are still presenting a problem air henry re viewed the work of the commission of which he has long been a member stating that is years ago they wore iallotted 300000 to spend alany expected them to build 100 miles of road with this money or at the rate of 300 per mile today the com mission are spending goo000 to 700000 annually of which the county puts up their proportion mr henry said that greater mileage was constantly being added to the system but the funds provided by the county government and city of toronto were hardly keeping apace the chairman of the commission air r e millet was called on next and surprised some of his listeners by explaining to them that bo had done business in this section many years ago iio mentioned the names of well known business men here 3 years ago among whom were dick noil ned williams frank allller and the stivers and buttons at ringwood he hadnt found out exactly what stouffvile was desirous of doing but suggested thai the town would lay sowers some day and this ought to lie considered prior lo putting down a high class road in any case he was ready to lend a listening ear to any suggest ions those present had to make respecting the road problem here air d sponce the parkdale member in the federal parliament and air gardhouse also spoke each expressing their willingness to co operate witli the town in an effort to solve satisfactorily the local road problem mr keith county magi strate and member of this com mission for 11 yrs thought the town should consider carefully the matter of sewers and curbing as without these he felt the job would never be what we desired to see engineer rose informed the gathering that next week the sur face program would commence fst of toronto and about the 10th of jilv the machinery would reach stouffville when the bad spots in the t ad would be sin t lied ail and an application of oil put on this work would be carried out regardless of what might be considered respect ing a higher type of road it would act as a temporary repair to main- tain the road allay the dust he suggested that if a belter road was desired for this town a com mittee might be appointed to work with the commission in arriving at the type of road wanted cost etc air rose spoke of the best road which cost 35000 per mile for an is foot width but he was of the opinion that this would be foolish to consider unless sewer pipes were put down the commission lie ex plained would bear the whole cost of an is foot roadway but the municipality would be called upon to hear hie cost of any extra width sewers and curbing air rose out lined the various types of high class road that they built ojid gave ap proximate costs he first referred to the type on the kennedy road this road has a tiiuch base tar binding and a top dressing of 3inches when linslied making ti 9inch thickness costing 2 per square yard tar penetration is the cheapest type of higher class road and it cost 2 per sq yard a sample of this road would be found south of brad ford a still finer road js the mixed macadam or black base coated with asphalt and laid liol under heavy roller pressure to a thickness of 0 inches in two courses of 3 inches each this road would run 225 sq yard or probably lubre in stouffville having regards to the foundation and short stretch ot roadway to be built another road is built of mixed i macadam 4 inches thick with 1 incites asphalt lop and this type cost 250 sq yard it has a finished thickness of ginchos i the hightest type of road tlmt is put down is that laid in toronto it has a cinch concrete base with a 2 inch asphalt top and cost 275 sq yard this gives i road flinches thick when finished and costs 35000 or 30000 per mile of 20 feet width of course ah rose was not advocating this class of road here but merely gave the figures for the general information of his listeners there is still the slab pavement road costing up to 2i0 sq yard he suggested that stouffville when pulling down a high class road might wish to leave open ditches some places while in oilier portions curbs and gutters would bo required curbs and gutters would cost us 1 per liner fool ami in addition there would he storm sewers to construct whatever class of road was decided on the commission would pay out right for is feet of the width among the locals called on to speak were mr ltobt aliller dr sangster and others all of whom voiced their opinion that stouffville should attempt to secure a high- class road that would be in harmony with many other municipalities around us with toastmaster dr ira freel at the head table sat all hie members of hie commission the engineer and the members of the stouffville council much valuable information was gained from the interchange of talk and the toronto gliosis receiv ed a hearty round of applause for paying us this visit and throwing so much light on the road situation it is understood that the business men will appoint a coin- mttleo and seek lo have the munici pal council appoint a similar number to go further into the nutter with hie commission as suggested by them and engineer rose local happenings stivers for uiuder twine a meeting of the school trustees
