and within a year dutchmen have repeated the historic feat of their au- cestprsj and taken the holland river marshes they have taken them marshes which eventually will com pare quite favorably with the tarns of old holland ami will include wind mills without which holland and all thinrs dutch would not be dutch farther btck titan goes the mem ory of the oldest timer in simcoe county there was holland river marsh ages before that but no lean lives to tell the tale tradition states this marsh was part of lake simcoe those who hear and understand its voice and the soft gurgle of the holland river when the wind wrink les up its face may now more of its history but oldtimers say that twas gradually through centuries this marsh was born caused by bull- rushes coarse grass and trees dying and decaying which tilled up this particular part of the lake even now tis told that digging down in the marsh from 4 to g feet through the black mack one comes upon timber in such good condition that villag ers use it for firewood voice of the imarsh there is a smug fastness about hoi land marsh as if it contained some deep impenetrable secret when the early morning sun lights up the lake and river there is a glow too on it standing on the clay banked roadway that runs through it one hears through its underworld denizens the voice of the marsh cr- cr- cr- cr- icr cr tr tr tr tr myriads of frogs and toads are croaking and trilling and the sound reverberates through the uplands far up the village of bradford one still hears the voice of the marsh re sounding at times like a subdued humming of wind oi telegraph wires secret of the marsh like a clinging mass on either side holland river holland marsh stretches itself proudly front schom- berg to lake simcoe covering an area ct severufi thousand acres for centuries it has lain smug and impenetrable but it has remained for the enterprising village of brad ford to discover its secret and wrest it from its grasp selkirk settolbrs bradford residents tell that the first people to reside along the marsh and farther inland were selkirk settlers those splendid sturdy scotsmen who braved untold hard- ship in the red river distriiit then risked home and life to come to a region where forests wore less dense and mother earth more kindly in be stowing a living these selkirk settlers however did not wrestle with the marsh and its problems according to ben coll ings riverman hay merchant and fisherman par excellence born and brought up in bradford pioneers who first worked the marsh in bradford were three frenchmen paul currier jos la duke and charlie la vina whom he remembered as a hoy these french settlers saw possibilities of using coarse marsh hay twisting it and selling it tor stuffing mattresses they also sold it to foundries for wrapping cores for casting pipes for their marsh hay t he frenchmen received as high as fortytwo dollars per ton from firms in toronto and elsewhere had these frenchmen cared to exert themselves they could have made a lot of money but they were content with just enough to get a- long and they let it go at that re flected riverman colllngs men of vision more years passed and bradford be came the thriving community it is to day yet while the marsh lay smug and seemingly mysterious human eyes were regarding it attentively a bradford merchant the late w d watson after much thought and years of consideration in 1910 sent to guelph for a man who knew about marshes and drainage schemes to visit bradford and give his opin ion regarding holland marsh re clamation the man who knew proved to he professor w h day canadian and professor of physics and auth ority on drainage in guelph agri cultural college professor day after a careful ex- amlnatlon and knowledge of re clamation schemes in essex and kent counties advised in favor of the scheme contending it could be done without lowering the level of lake simcoe he recommended three things 1 construct a cutoff ditch or canal around the marsh along the base of the high land to prevent water from flowing onto the marsh or into the old river course it this were done then the high land water shut off from the upper river would be diverted along the canals which would empty into the river below the reclaimed area 2 construct a dam across the river at the lower end of the claimed area so that the lake water could not back up the enclosed portion of the old river bed 3 install a pumping plant to pump the water front the enclosed section of the river over the dam whence it would flow into the lake as at pres ent returning to guelph prof day in cooperation with w d watson and e collings had a test made the following year a small plot of marsh muck was heaped behind lukes mil bradford and vegetables planted so satisfactory did it prove that the celery carried off the prize at the local fall lair in lill the holland marsh syndicate with other owners was organized coming of marsh king prof day resigned from guelph college in 1919 and went into manu facturing business of lightning rod conductors for a period of nearly five years in bradford prof day is a slight wiry man with clever face and at times whim- i sical expression born near lindsay he graduated from tile university of toronto in 1ss3 dutch families come it was prof day who last year brought out three dutch families to work his marsh land experienc hav ing shown that hollandeis and bel gians are among the most experienc ed for marsh work this year the dutchies as they are called by villagers are employed by a j saint of bradford under a fiveyear contract to work his marsh lot five windmills are to be erected by the hollanders as they have ex pressed a preference for dutch windmills to the modern electric pump agent for 57 ed and soon they shall disappear as business centres we dont be lieve a word of this hut at the same time it is a hard argument to meet the fact that the country is becoming less populated and the cities growing by leaps and bounds seems to spell the doom of the small er centres to a good many the reasons given are numerous but the one most often used is that the present day good roads and the motor cars are robbing the smaller towns of the business they should have and piling it into the larger centres of course if the smaller centres are prepared to accept this argu ment as final then it must be true but personally we are inclined to the opinion expressed by a writer in one of our leading magazines who says that this is a matter for the town itself to decide writing in this strain he says if it is a live town with a bunch of good merchants who hustle advertise and give the kind of service that pleases the auto and the good roads will help the town and icause it to grow and prosper however if the town is a dead one no push no progress poor and in competent merchants then the auto and the good roads will most certain ly hasten its end easy and rapid traveling are the making of a good town people like to trade in such a town and the good road used by them to visit such a town it is all a matter of the town itself if the trade is going through your town to the next town wake yourself up and then wake up the rest of your neighbor merchants and business men dont knock the auto and the good toads make use of them to us it seems there is little to be said that would further the logic ex pressed above it may be that the business men of a town may measure up to every standard individually this will avail them little if they fall down collectively to lie successful a town must work as a community individual effort is not sufficient to put a whole municipality over the top each individual business man and citizen must he good individual ly and at the same time all of them must come together for the good of the common cause- a few blockers a few kiiockers and a few business men or citizens who are always out of step j with their fellows can do a town mlore harm than flood famine or tornado it is well to remember that we cannot always have our own way all the time it is sometimes necessary to change our views for the good of the community and the man wlio stand pat thinking he is strong minded may ottimes only be pig headed in the present changed condi tions throughout the whole world municipalities like business enter prises fnust be up and doing if
