of the stouffville council was held on friday evening last all the members being present with reeve sanders in the chair the minutes of the previous meet ing were read and confirmed a letter was read from the hydro commission intimating that a sum of 150351 was the present amount of the surplus to the credit of the town an acknowledgement of the re ceipt of the petition signed the pre vious month re rum running was read from col lennox who stated that it would give him great pleas ure to present same to the proper authorities a representative of the western assurance corporation interviewed the council soliciting the policy of indemnity now held by the globe at same premiums and benefits consideration was postponed until the next meeting a large and imposing deputation was received from the local horti cultural society headed by the frest j r hodgins who read a carefully prepared peiirioj which we print in our next issue the clerk was in structed to acknowledge receipt of same and express to the society the councils appreciation of the inter est taken in town affairs by them and of their willingness to as far as possible carry out their sugges tions numerous complaints having been received of the nuisance and damage caused by dogs not under control and of the council officers to abate the nuisance having failed the council passed a bylaw by an un animous vote to prohibit any dogs at any time of the year either day or night being at large and not under control the bylaw to be published in our issue qflb week attention was drawn to the park ing of cars on the space in front of the fire hall and steps taken to en deavor to prevent a repitition of same consideration was given to the letter received from the bank of commerce respecting the increase of th charges lor collecting the hydro and and water accounts and while regretting that the previous agree- m nt had so soon been cancelled the council were of the opinion that the public would prefer to continue the present arrangement rather than the old method of payment at the council dffice and for the present accounts will continue to be paid at the bank of commerce councillor russnell introduced the question of providing a free parking place for autos to prevent congestion on main street and sug gested that the council might con sider acquiring the vacant lot on mill street at a cost ofabout 1500 the proposal received no support from other members it being con sidered that a well filled street gave an impression of life and business much to be desired councillor rusnell also introduc ed the matter of improved market facilities and it was aecided to ask ratcliff co to meet the council at a special meeting to discuss the subject the council decided to meet in special session to consider the peti tion of the horticultural society and other matters at an early date many accidents mrs harold warriner of toronto and a former resident here tea down the cellar steps of her home last week sustaining a broken collar bone mrs warriner is recovering nicely from the shock while returning from a business trip last week mr john miller of brougham brother of our mr robt miller got his auto into a deep rut and a passing car ran into him throwing mr miller out and break ing his leg james madill claremonts oldest resident who is so years of age fell breaking his hip on the floor of his home a few days ago owing to his advanced age it will require a long time to knit the injured bone again his daughter mrs george t lee of stouftville has been in claremont for a few days assisting to nurse her father her niiny friends and acquaint ances will be sorry to learn that mrs nelson smith late of stouifville but now living in toronto while on her way to church fell on the icy sidewalk sustaining a fracture to her shoulder in two places and also injuring her back mrs smith was removed to the hospital where she is reported in serious condition slipping while on the street mrs frank cooper of sunderland sister of mrs ed williams east end fell on the icy pavement in that village seriously injuring her one knee mrs cooper was carried into a nearby house where it was first thought she had suffered a fractured leg but medical examination revealed a nasty dislocation of the knee exgixeek to prepare plans for new bridge engineer babcock was given in structions by markham township and brotherinlaw to messrs a c and herman burkholder of stouff ville died at his home in the city last thursday in his 49th year deceased was taken ill at the school early wednesday and went home he became seriously ill the same evening and passed away he had been principal of keele street school for 16 years the school grew from one of six rooms to one of twentythree rooms the late mr harwood was born in oxford county near woodstock ha began his teaching career at a rural school near stouffville and a short time later joined the staff of the owen sound high school from there he came to toronto twentytwo years ago v the late mr harwood was a mason an active member of the principals assooiation and attended iwalmer rd baptist church his widow formerly miss llewella burkholder a daughter mrs e m mcdonald and three sons fred w wilmot j and donald a all of to ronto survive together with his mother social personal mrs wm harding of the east end is quite ill with pleurisy mr ira brown has been quite ill for the past two weeks mrs jas waddingham of toronto was in town last week dr ira and mrs freel are expect ed home from england this week mrs murray of flesherton was the away on saturday feby 23rd in the person of daniel wideinan retired farmer a son of the late jacob wide- man a widely known mennonlte minister in his day and generation daniel was born on the old wide- man homestead at almlra on august 25th 1s50 he married margaret burkolder in 1s72 and farmed lot 18 con s until 1903 four children were the result of the issue william a mrs eli hoover ada mrs a c barkey mary eva and mrs leonard w hoover susannah all of whom survive and are living at their respective homes on the sth and 9th cons of markham his wife margaret burkholder predeceased him on june 1 1901 and on april 10 1902 he marriea emma hoover daughter of the late s r hoover who survives him mr wideman continued farming until 1903 when he retired and five years later pur chased a house and magistrate clark in the pickering police court on a charge of chicken thieving was convicted and sentenced to two years less one day in the guelph re formatory the accused elected to be tried summarily and pleaded guilty he admitted to a record extending over the past seventeen years and to having spent two terms in the ports mouth penitentiary for tue same offence the case arose out of a theft of chickens from the farm of henry marks of pickering township on august 22 at the time the offender eluded the police and could not be traced uuiii he was sentenced in tor- onto police court to sixty days at the jail farm for the theft of gloves upon the expiration of his term he was handed over by the authorities to the provincial police to answer the charge of chicken thefts in this court stouffville for burial at tho local cemetery a large fol lowing of old friends accompanied the funeral who were joined at the united church by many others who knew the deceased when he lived here 19 yeats ago edward cain was a son of the late thos cain and was horn near sandford in scott township 72 years ago when a young man he united in marriage with grace reynolds a daughter of the late wm reynolds and for some years they farmed cast of stouffville at glasgow the late mr cain was highly re spected and is survived by a family of four children his wife having passed away in 1914 mrs robt townsend tacoma seattle and quilcene rev mr hargreaves conducted the service assisted- by revs reld link and bell of the presbyterian churches of port townsend and quil cene and the large attendance and numerous floral offerings testified to the esteem in which mr percy was held a mixed quartette sang a city foursquare and abide with me while mrs edwards soprano sang while the years of eternity roll mr percy was born in ontario and entered the service of his master at the age of 20 preaching for 25 years both in canada and in the eastern and western states after retiring from tho port townsend baptist church he served a term as auditor of jefferson county then moving to quilcene where he acted as postmas ter for six years but since that time he has lived a quiet life he was a member of the game commission and took an active interest in com munity affairs entlearlng himself by hs readiness to ever lend a helping hand to those in distress besides his loving wife he is sur
