defeat of the amend ment a resolution expressing pro gress was passed by a narrow major ity which was taken as a further indication of approval of the plan the project calls for the establish ment of one county wide collegiate board to control aii secondary edu cation in the county as recommend ed by the york county education committee to reduce present ex penses north versus south when the the project met with defeat in a i iq scholars at high schools in mun- close vote the proposed amend- 1 icipalities other than those in which the students live heavy iiicivjise the tremendous strides in educa tional costs since 1900 were also pointed out by mr beckett who com pared the figure of 7000 for 1900 with the 1928 cost of 240000 and furthermore forecast a heavy in crease in 1929 if the present system were continued it is not the fault of the county or representatives on the high sohool board he continued it is the fault of the provincial government they have established a system to take care of pupils who are only idl ing their time at the expense of the county we should seek an amend ment from the provincial govern ment to the adolescent act expressing the voice of the north as favoring the plan for a county- wide board reeve w c gohn of markham stated that six capable men could be secured who were big lemonville clarence hood was in the city on business this week we hope away feby 6th 1927 gone from us but leaving memory death can never take away memories that will always linger while upon this earth we stay ever remembered by wife son and daughter palities with the latter led by york i enough to attend to the whole matter township vigorously supporting the system now in vogue the question was raised early in the debate regarding the reasons for the proposed change with the sup porters of the proposal explaining that the steadily increased cost of education called for drastic action to curtail expenditures reeve f a lundy of newmarket explained that the cost of secondary education to the county had in creased s00 per cent in the past 10 years and since the assessment had not increased in anything like the same ratio the cost of education was being felt very heavily in the tax rate it is most unfair that one high school board erect a building at dou ble the cost paid by another school section he declared in advocating a standardized basis for fixing the cost of all county collegiate build ings to be arrived at by the propos ed county board in answer to the query raised by one member regarding why he con sidered the present system unsatisj factory mr lundy explained that he was not casting reflections on the members of the present local high school boards as he believed they were carrying out their duties in a highly capable manner to reducta costs the chief reason for proposing a change according to the speakerwas a desire to lessen expenditureswhile it was also felt that the county did not receive sufficient representation at present the county appoints three of the representatives on each school board and the local municipality chooses the other three he explained we find however that the three men ap pointed by the county are almost always residents of the high school district which they serve and the county therefore receives poor re presentation deputy reeve d webster of wes ton gave vigorous support to the of secondary education in the county reeve westbury that plan would be perfectly satisfactory if the coun ty paid the whole cost but the mun icipalities pay half the ost and de serve half the representation- dep reeve oheeseman the pro vincial government should take over the whole matter that would eli minate the lack of cooperation be tween the high school boards and the educational committee reeve a a mckenzie urged that council and the various school boards cooperate in the matterwhile reeve westbury brought forth his proposed amendment calling for a conference to discuss the problem the amendment failed to carry and following the passing of a resol ution expressing progress the trou bled meeting was speedily adjourned leaving the solution of the problem still in doubt
