saturday the price of hogs the vagaries of the prises at which hogs sell in this country the way they wander up and down from tow to high and from high to low has long been a conundrum to everybody who takes an interest in such mat ters says the lucknow sentinel the impression left is that the market is being manipulated by the packers and there is little wonder that one should reach that conclu sion at times it looks very much as thougji prices were shot upwards for a short time until hogs become plen tiful and then as suddenly dropped when producers are into the business strongly loaded up and obliged to take any price that is offered but a study of how prices in this country and the united states act ually do move up and down convince es one that this is not so excepting to a very limited extent after all the prices paid do depend upon a number of things one big factor being the prevalence of good or bad times or business conditions in the baconcon suming countries with several million workmen in britain idle the demand for canadian bacon in britain will be much less than when he army of unemployed is small the same applies to the united stat es and to canada the industrial development coun cil of canadian meat packers re cently issued a table showing the run of hog prices at toronto buf falo chicago winnipeg omaha and calgary from january until novem ber 192s and it is quite remark able and interesting to observe with what regularity prices have corres ponded at these several large mark ets this is quite natural for when ever there is shortage and conse quent rising prices at one point sup ply naturally flows in that direction at buffalo in january of 1928 hogs sold from 905 to 1010 at toronto the prices paid were from 895 to 985 at chicago834 to 932 at winnipeg s49 to 970 by the end of july prices had gone up at buffalo to 1217 and at tor onto to 1333 the price at chicago was then 1100 and at winnipeg 1267 by the first of september prices reached the highest point for the year at buffalo 1363 at tor onto 1434 chfcago 1242 at winnipeg 1333 later the chicago price went to 1291 at this point a decline set in until at the beginning of the year buffalo 91j toronto 970 chicago 892 and winnipeg 915 the fact that prices kept so uni form over the wide territory from buffalo to omaha and from toronto to calgary may suggest that buyers at all points were in agreement and fixed the prices on the otherhand it may be that all were subject to njarket influences practically lth francis ward was a na1 tive of reach twp a resident of whitchurch town ship for 44 for he suspected bodysnatch ers were at work and sure enough in a few minutes he saw two body- snatchers stagger from the ceme tery carrying a body they placed it upright in the auto as though it were alive propping it securely in the hak seat and then they hurried back to the icemetery to fill the violated grave again the doctor in their absence lifted the body out of the auto hid it under a hedge and took its place himself soon the scoundrels returned one seated himself in the back seat beside the body so as to support it then in the darkness they droveoff ater a while the man in the rear seat said in a rather awed tone this body seemed mighty warm for a corpse the chauffeur reached back his hand and touched it dont it though he muttered between perplexity and fear then the corpse in deep sep ulchral tones exclaimed warm of course im warm and if you had been where ive been for the last two days youd be warm too with loud yells of horror the bodysnatch ers leaped from the auto and fled
