review the past history of a church many avenues of interest invite entrance the re cords present much of interest in the matter of old residents father son and grandson local conditions community interests past pecu liar wording and spelling chaugos in financial conditions changing values in properties and remunera tion but what of these is this the highest interest or the real purpose of the review of the past history of a church we feel rather that the avenue of greatest importance and of largest blessing is the one that leads us to the place where we may tune in and reproduce the spiritual aspira tions of those who have gone seen the hand of our heavenly father in his children learn some lessons from the seasons of spiritual barren ness as well as the seasons of spirit ual blessing in short to get first a new and enlarge vision of the lid portance and purpose of what we call a church and second our re sponsibilities and privileges in this regard so that through this new and enlarged vision we may be brought to the place not where we may do larger things for the master the impossible but to the place where we may surrender our all to he who is the king of kings and lord of hosts who is able to take our weak nesses yea our nothingness and by his power use us to his own glory and make us instruments in his hands to the saving of precious souls sometimes we say our church with the emphasis on the word our and we organize and plan and marshall all our energies to make it a success in financial and numerical results let us remember the masters own words to peter upon this rock i will build my church have we a church here then the master says it is my church hark it is my church no earthly power of human ability or organization has built or owns it if it is a church it is my church and has been built only by and through the power of the holy spirit and on the one and only foundation even the christ the son of the liv ing god in this light what is the past und present history of this unit of the lords church away back in the thirties of the past century a godly woman living in england of goodly family and led of the spirit in read ing the word was brought to convic tions of truth that brought conflict in the family life she true to her faith arid what she believed to be her masters word and command in the matter of baptism found it nec essary and expedient to sacrifice earthly inheritance and family bonds and with her husband set sail for a new land arriving in canada in the early forties they located in on tario and started life anew on the farm which is today the site of the present church building and in the then only baptist church in the community the parent church on the ninth line of markam township known as the first markham baptist church they established their mem bership and worshipped god accord ing to their conception of his word for some years the eight miles be tween home and church were no bar rier to constant and loving attend ance at the place of worship visi tors were always urged to accom pany them but on refusing were allowed the privilege of remaining alone until in the appointed place the family had rendered unto god that which was his viz forget not the assembling of yourselves etc and from lovebjating hearts had united with the brethren in lifting up their hearts in praise in suppli cation and feasting upon the spirit ual food of his word this home verily was one of the kings out posts in the land of the enemy and no secular or material interests were sufficient to interfere with the dally hour set apart for worship and fel lowship with their god not a god of stone or the creation of mans mind or mens hands but god the living god the one who heard who loved who strengthened and sustained them in many an hour of need and of difficulty and who enriched their lives and made their hearts respond with joy and gladness to his serviced the community at this time was rough and godless the sabbath day given over to horseracing games of all kinds and the utter disregard of god or his laws was the all- wise infinite god mindful of these things had he in his infinite wis dom knowing the end even from the beginning touched the heart of this godly woman and her husband and brought about the conditions in the old land that made it difficult to re main in tho old easy selfsatisfying conditions and led them forth into a far land to be the instruments n continued on pago 8 whitchurch nomination miding i do not suppose that any young member of york county council ever had a more stormy career therethan i have had but i want to tell you men here that when the last audit of york county on the highways com mission books was made it was shown that i was right that material had been paid for by york county commission that bad never been placed on the roads so stated the retiring reeve morgan baker in his address to the electors at yandorf on monday mr baker dealt largely with county affairs in dis cussing the cost of secondary educa tion in the county mr baker stated that whereas in 1920 the county spent 2732242 in 192s the cost to the county was 24074460 but the increase was largely made lip in the unnecessary elaboration of school buildings gymnasiums and concert halls that one township in the south was even providing free text books for the pupils and wanted the county to pay half the cost of trans portation of pupils to and from school he added we in the north protested i brought in a resolution against it but they have the pre- pondrance of votes and they outvote us they force us to pay mr baker went further tostate that it was time seeing that we could not get justice from the county council on this matter that the northern muni cipalities cooperate and take a de putation to wait upon the hon-min- ister of education and ask him for legislation defining what school costs the county of york should pay for in the matter of municipal govern ment in the county of york he show ed how the cost had jumped from 10930 in 1924 to over 20000 in 1928 he claimed that the work of county council could have been done in half the time if the standing committees would put forth an effort to get in their reports that considerable portion of time was wasted just standing around waiting for these reports to be brought in for discussion in the matter of assessment he showed np how whitchurch town ship was assessed up to 54 per tent of sale value for county equalization purposes whereas these southern mun icipalities were only assessed up to 34 to 35 per cent of sale value and thus whitchurch was bearing an un due share of county expenditures and most of the money being spent in the south in the matter of municipal relief that in 1926 when the law had been changed that air hospitals bills of indigent patients should be paid by the county and one half charged directly to the local municipality the cost to the county was 42000 in 1928 the cost was over 90000 a resolution is on the books of the county asking to jiaye the old sys tem restored at least in york county mr kidd in his address dealt with purely the township affairsconfininfi his remarks largely to the road question he stated that during 1928 7740 yards of gravel had been placed on township roads 1 yds to the rod making a little better than 16 mites that had been gravel ed that of the 23930 that had been spent on roads and bridges over 3000 had been spent bri a larce grader and 3 cement bridges along with retiring reeve mrbaker has gone on record as opposing the appointment of a school or public health nurse until such time as the people wanted one appointed for deputyreeve the following were nominated ross e ratcllff g w williams geo h leary all three addressed the council on their own behalf mr ratcllff stressing his length of service in the council- that he now felt that iad- vancement was due him mr williams stated that he felt that the electors would cast their votes for the man that had delivered the goods and that he considered he had that he was instrumental in getting better tenders for culverts on 7th- cori line that he was re sponsible largely tor the leasing of the gravel pit near bogarttown as suring the township good gravel for the next few years whereas we had in the past to be- satisfied with the poorer grade left over after the con tractors got theirs for cement con struction work mr leary who has spent 3 years in the deputyreeve tehair wished to come back to fit he felt that he could serve the township better than either of his opponents particularly in county council with his pastox- perience to guide him since the nomination meeting both mr leary- and mr ratcllff have re tired from the field for the seat of deputyreeve giving mr williams an acclamation mr ratcllff who was also nominated for council is staying in the field for that position mr rao nnd mr evans both now men to aspire for seats n council
