view of the illumination of the falls also crossed over the noted peace bridge the funeral of the late lb schell was largely attended on saturday afternoon the late mr schell and his family lived for many years on the farm now occupied by mrhicks six years ago he and his wife moved to welland where they had charge of the city mission under the breth ren in christ church until the time of his death a number of friends from welland attended the funeral service here which was conducted by bishop bert sherk of stovens- ville and eld l shoalts of wclland- port the baptist faith for so years or more these people have not chang ed their old time religion it is the convention that has changed said mr whitcombe mr whitcombe was of the opinion that a limited number of churches might be cut off eacn year so that the public would never realize the great masses against the convention he opinioned that every year would still see another section cut disloyalty is the general cause of the recommendation made to the open convention some of the churches had notified the convention of withdrawal others had declared themselves in open sympathy with the organization sponsored by rev dr t t shields and still others have without notice withdrawn sup port from the convention and given it to the new union that the schism in baptist ranks is complete and apparently irrevoc able is evidenced by the fact that none of the dozen outcast church es sought to register delegates at the convention rev w w fleislier and mr jas h ratclife were delegates from the stouffville church mr pinch of camp jackl pennock received the first air mail to arrive in stouffville but mrjacob yake comes along with proof that he received a letter from saginaw mich on aug 20th mailed to him on the 19th jack will now step into second place although his letter came the greatest distance its matter of record to know that the first mail to land in stouffville com ing mostly by air was the summer of 192s who can tell us when and who had the first automobile this is in the lifetime of most of our citizens the late levi b schell was a mission worker a valued christian worker in the brethren in christ faith and a sterl ing christian character passed foe- yond on tuesday october 16th 192s at welland in the person of levi b schell aged 65 years who succumb ed to ill health with which he had wrestled for some months follow ing the summer tabernacle meetings at bridgeburg cheapside and stay- ner in which he took a keen inter est and active part he contracted bronchial trouble which ultimately proved fatal the late mr schell for some years was engaged in missionary work on behalf of the brethren in chrlstand it was in this pursuit that he left markham township some years ago to do active- work in other parts of the province he was born in mark ham and lived near gormley forty- one years ago he united in marriage with anna hoovei daughter of the late christian hoover of the 3rd concession of markham and to their union five children were born four of whom survive together with the bereaved widow the children are louis schell of newmarket irs henry steckley of gormley airs lloyd moyer of markham and mrs lome miller of markham the de ceased is also survived by eight grandchildren and by two brothers and one sister ira schell and norma schell and mrs john mcquarrie all living at distant joints in ontario the late mr schell was a man of high ideals and possessed a splendid personality and for six years on the mission field he met with good suc cess in winning souls for christ the funeral on saturday after noon last took place from the resi dence of his daughter mrs moyer at dicksons hill to the heise hill church and cemetery bishop sherk of stevensvllle and elder shultz con ducted the services at the housothe church and the graveside in the pre sence of many old friends and sym pathizers of the family bible society meeting the annual meeting of the local bible society was held in the united church stouffville on sunday even ing last when a large congregation from the various churches in town were present on the platform were the presi dent amos lehman revss shantz rev e morton rev h s warren and the secretary of the parent so ciety rev j b m armour the singing was led by an aug mented choir assisted by mr noah stouffer with his silver cornet and with miss lehman at the organ the chair also rendered the well known selection oh that will be glory for me in very effective manner after opening exercises the chair man introduced the speaker who was making his first appearance in stouffville it is not too much to say that the audience was more than pleased with the address given by the rev gentleman who cut away from the beaten path so aften fol lowed by representatives of the bible society and other organizationsand did not load his address with a mass of figures his appeal was rather to the young people present to per mit the word of gods grace to influence their own lives that they in turn would wish to use that know- ledge and influence for the well be ing of others- an appeal for generous response when the society collectors make their canvas will not we are certain have fallen on deaf or indifferent ears rev mr armour may rest assured or an appreciative audience whenever he may visit stouffville in the future in the death of john urquhart at his late home here on monday after noon one of the fathers of incorpor ation few of whom are left has passed beyond he was in his s6th year and succumbed to an illness which befel him about ten months ago the end came very peacefully nnd mr urquhart passed out in his sleep he was a native of scarboro but came to stouffville village more than half a century ago and became one of the active citizens in the incorpor ation of the village which at that time formed part of whitchurch and markham townships he was ap pointed as the first assessor hence he made the first assessment roll in existence here but two years later he rclenquished the position to be come a member of the council in this capacity he was highly regarded as evidenced from the fact that he was almost regularly returned as councillor from 1s77 until 1s9g in 1905 he was appointed clerk and held this position for nearly 20 years or until his retirement when the office was taken over by mr dough erty the late mr urquhart was re garded as one of the best clerks stouffville ever had and we have been fortunate in having some cap able men politically he was an ardent liberal of the old school a presbyterian in religion and a gen tleman in all his ways he possess ed a pleasing personality and was honored by all who knew him the deceased was twice married his first wife being the late hager kribbs his second
