municipal council of stouffville brings in a closure biil that will limit the members to not more than five speeches each on any one subject there is grave pro bability that the monthly sessions may lengthen out to last until after midnight this years council has developed a lot of orators who would do themselves proud at any of the present day political picnics if their subject suited them as does municipal politics friday evening council convened at 730 and there wasnt a dull moment until the gavel came down on the table declaring the session ended at shortly afse eleven oclock there were present reeve sanders and councillors dowswell ward mckinnon and borinsky the regular jane session of the council met following the court of revision when a considerable num ber of matters were discussed and action taken in some cases george patton offered to clean up the lots known as the dumping grounds in the south of the town provided the the town council would deed ths property to him after he had them cleared of the rubbish mr patten to be given two years to complete the work the offer looked good to the council but no action was taken to complete the deal it being thought better to advertise the lots constable edw pennock appeared and asked that signs be placed on main street from boadways to shaws prohibiting parking on that side of the road on saturday nights council authorized him to carry out his request the park commission asked that 500 of the government grant for park improvement be set aside in a special account so that it would be available to pay their men engaged in work at the park and for future expense the commission might be put to the request was granted on motion introduced by councillors ward and dowswell in order to comply with the weed act of tfhe ontario govt john gower was appointed inspector to see that obnoxious weeds are cut at the proper time of year on all streets under the juridiction of the council the preceedings warmed up a little and one or two of the audience livened up in their chairs when councillor ward demanded to know how long the council would allow the stop sign at the 10th con- session south to remain where it was placed near the corner by councillor dowswell when the law demanded it should be something like 16 feet from the corner mr dowswell said he wasnt disposed to move it and the reeve called for order order when mr ward made some reference to mussillni tactics a new departure is being con templated by the council which will make a big improvement in the work of the clerks ofllce and will re lieve him of a great deal of work in the matter of collecting hydro and water bills it is intended to dispose of the services of a collector too and gather all taxes through the bank a charge of 2 v4 cents per bill is made by the bank to do this work and it is estimated that the total expense would be saved in the salary of the collector any unpaid items not taken to the bank would have to be taken in charge by the clerk all members of council ex pressed their approval of the ohango and a bylaw will be prepared auth orizing it and will likely be passed at the next meeting councillor ward introduced the matter and councillor borinsky enquired how long the council was going to wait before facing the mat- tor of bringing town reservoirs up- todate so that the muddy water which is often noticeable especially in the springtime would be stopped he stated that the grain fields north of the reservoir was the cause of much of the trouble this spring as it was fertilized and mr ratcliff owner of the land was authority for the opinion also that this field drained into tho water council lor borinsky advocated the sinking of artesian wells but the matter was not acted on other than to agree to visit tho water works property in n body shortly messrs amos lehman d m hoover norman mclean clayt stouffer and dorothy smith peti tioned the council for a cement sidewalk on the east side of pbrish ave fronting their pportics the petition was favorably received and the clerk was instructed to write to the trust company to ascertain if they will sign the petition for the stevens property and if they cros chapter iode as previously stated council sits as court of revision east ender charges justice not mmtd out there was liveiy interest taken in the court of revision meeting on friday evening when the members of the stovffvise council met to consider appeals against the work just completed by assessor frank h sangster it was a tense moment when edw walls told the coart which was pre sided over by reeve sanders that it was nothing but spite work that pre vented his appeal from being al lowed mr walls is assessed for 1150 on his bouse and lot or 50 less than in 1927 owing to having sold off a small frontage to harold forsyth for which he received 150 he argued that he should have a reduction of 75 instead of only 50 this would be 50 of a cut on the property sokl assessor frank sangster contented that the assess ment was not too high and that the cut of 50 made because mr walls had sold a lot off was ampie mr ward wanted to know why a reduction of 150 was not made when that value of land had been sold off but the assessor held that it wasnt worked out that way mr walls is assessed on a 40 or 50 basis and he claimed he took off 40 per cent of the sale price of the land sold the other members of the court evidently thought the assessment was a just one and flatly refused to reduce it whereupon mr walls told them it was a bit of spite work and left the court declaring they were rummies but before the reeve could determine whether the term ascribed to them was parliamentary mr walls had gone if the appeal had been granted and the assess ment cut by 25 to bring it in accord with the ideas of the owner of the property the court would have lost approximately 75c in taxes and mr walls would have profited by this amount mr walls of course claimed his assessment too high in previous years ab brown was present to appeal against his menagerie or junk bus iness and property assessment on main street he was represented by legat counsel in mr button and was successful in having the business assessment cut from 300 to 250 and the property assessment from 1800 to 1600 a total reduotion of 250 walter duke was also kindly dealt with and obtained a reduction of 50 on a barn he ownes near tho brilllnger market garden in the west end also john gower or his wife was granted a reduction of 300 on building occupied by them as a dwelling on main street the assessor stated he was in error in making the assessment as it stood and approved of the reduction to 700 on house and lot the imperial oil company ap pealed against being assessed for the gasoline stations along main st of which there are five assessed at 100 each as there appeared to be no daw to back up the assessment they were struck from the roll with a number of minor appeals idianging the names of property owners and tenants the court arose and confirmed the 1928 assessment with the few changes made mr ira brown east of town lost a valuable horse through indigestion a few days ago births helse
