of uxbridge has just completed his roll for 1927 and judging by the figures he has to submit to the coun cil mr mcdonald made a fairly thor ough clean up out of a total sum of 3522298 that he started out to collect last fall he has garnered it all but 24150 and 2702 cancell ed by the council of the 24150 outstanding a goodly portion is held up owing to the taxes being on a property held under the soldiers settlement scheme and it is not certain that such taxes can be collected at all the amount of uncollected taxes have been returned to the county treasurer at whitby to be charged against the dealer stouffville the regular april meeting of the markham township council was held in the township hall unlon- ville on monday afternoon with reeve gobn in the chair and the following members present deputy reeve r l stiver 2nd deputyreeve george b padget and councillors r j beany and r a smith the matter of the appoiutment of a road superintendent for the town ship was introduced but was left over for a special meeting in the near future when a representative of the ontario department of high ways will be preseut one half of the salary of the superintendent is paid by the province and the depart ment regulation require that all ap pointments to this office shall have their ratification deputyreeve pad- get expressed the opinion that there was no use of markham township employing a man during the winter months when there was practically no work to be done he was also opposed to the payment of mileage and said he favored paying a super intendent 125 per month straight salary for eight months in the year councillor smith aim expressed the opinion that this would be sufficient the matter will be fully discussed at the special meeting and the road foremen in the various divisions will also be appointed several ap plications for the positions of road foreman have already been received i and it is probably that there will be some change in the personnel this year applications were receiv ed on monday from j h haynes milliken d shadlock div no 5 p r mann box grove and george w bennett box grove j s mcnair and reeve j lunau of richmond hill asked the mark ham council for a larger grant to ward richmond hill fair and the annual grant was boosted from 15 to 35 on motion of messrs padget and beatty mr miller one of the trustees of the police village of unionvilleask- ed what action was taken regarding the new proposed plan of the village which had been under consideration for some time this new plan will take considerable property into the village and reeve gohn pointed out that it would be necessary for the county council to ratify the bylaw at the june session in the mean time he promised to see the engineer and ascertain just how far the pro ject had proceeded and have steps taken to complete it mr kincaide asked for stone to be placed on the fifth concession council promised to consider the matter when laying out the years work councillor beatty asked if the pile of gravel at gormley could not now be used to relieve some of the bad road conditions in that district it is understood that the gravel was drawn to the pile some years ago as road work and had not yet been used g h duncan of the langstaff supply co langstaff gave the coun cil quotations on stone gravel cul verts posts and other road require ments for the year r coulson asked refund of his dog tax as his dog was killed the day after the assessor was around he was instructed to see the tax col lector there was considerable discussion concerning the condition of roads throughout the township it was the unanimous opinion that the drag should be operating on all roads just as soon as weather conditions permitted superintendent middleton reported that his search for town ship drags had resulted in the loca tion of twelve it was felt that there was considerable difficulty in this matter as drags were often used on the roads and then- taken home by farmers and often could not be loca ted it was felt that the drag was a very useful and inexpensive piece of machinery and so that all sec tions of the township might have the benefit of them on motion of de putyreeve padget and councillor beatty the reeve was authorized to buy ten for immediate delivery the price quoted was 18 each the proposed widening of the langstaff slderoad was discussed at some length it is now a provincial road and the department proposes to carry out some extensive improve ments to the road and have request ed the township to have the owners move their fences to the proper places it is understood from a plan which has been submitted that a great many of the owners in mark ham have their present fences on the highway and before any contracts are let it will be necessary to have the road widened to the proper width the ontario highway act by which the township each year receives a grant in proportion to the money expended requires that early in tho year an estimate of all work be sub mitted to tho department this is rather a difficult problem for town ships as tho councillors are unable to definitely fix tho expenditure until the annual inspection has been made in tho spring and the work for tho year decided upon however it is a necessity that tho department have an estimate and the following was submitted by the council on monday as estimate of the coming years ex penditure on roads construction 5000 bridge construction 10000 machinery 1000 superintendent salary 2000 maintenance and re pairs 25000 making a total of 43000 this estimate is not bind- in any way on the council the following accounts were pass ed a duncan unlonvllle 3680 d boyd stouffville 1880 d gra ham stouffville 840 fr mann markham 420 l middleton sal ary
