mrs grw thomas for injuries received in an automobile accident last august against mr and mrs chas billings of gormley has been settled without going to court while the amount of damages asked in the markham and a resolution was passed that the minister of agricul ture be asked to consider the desir ability of issuing certificates to those breeders who submit their flocks to this test a good attendance of members manifested the interest that the local hen men take in the society it is hoped that in the neat future a meeting of the society will be hold in stouffville to stimulate interest in poultry raising hanna wideman to rest passes after being in poor health for some tlmo there passed peacefully away at her residence lot 19 con g uxbridge township on sunday feb 12th 1928 hanna wideman wife of george hopkins in her 75th year she was of a retiring nature and was highly respected in the community she was a member ot the christian church at blooming- ton- born in markham township the deceased was a daughter ot the lato mr and mrs samuel wideman who were pioneers of that township and were wellknown and highly respect ed for many years mr hopkins work cd for todd cook of stouffville about 18 years ago with her hus band they moved to uxbridge tp to mourn her loss besides her husband she leaves seven children namely herbert at home edward of victoria corners roy of uxbridge tp mrs b arthurs mrs ronconl mrs b brown tortfnto and mrs m linton of oshawa it was run off with despatch and the audience dismissed at about 1030 oclock the feature of the evening was the seven addresses each speaker orating on canada after the first two or three were heard it was evi dent to all that the judges would have a hard time arriving at a de cision as most of them spoke with real merit each pupil held the floor for about ten minutes and after listening to them one could not help but feeling proud to be a cana dian under the british flag janet button winner of the contest in 1927 was again declared winner by the judges and as a result she is eligible to enter the star contest representing the local school the successful contestant in this event to be held in toronto shortly will be awarded a trip to europe this sum mer with all expenses paid luella stouffer won second place in the contest friday night mildred mckay 3rd linora brown 4th judging from the finding of the judges the coming generation of men are not going to be in it with the women as talkers any more than the present generation for the only two boy contestants failed to capture a place in the list of winners they are robt norris and wilbur hill another contestant blanche topham made an excellent speech on can adas future the judges were rev w s whit combe garnet stewart son of mr arid mrs robt stewart of this town arid high school teacher in toronto also mr gale ot markham high school staff mildred mckay blanche topham and opal doten contestants in elo cution finished in the order named the judging being done by mrs r winterstein and miss m gardhouse the presentation of diplomas was made by rev c e mcleod chair man of the evening carl davis president of the school literary society presented the general pro ficiency medals to bruce rowbot- ham betty booth and robt norris while principal stouffer made the presentation of prizes to the winners in oratory and at the same time seized the opportunity to thank the citizens in general for their patron age the oratorical contest and com mencement exercises of the local school are growing in favor with the citizens each year unfortunately this year there are so many func tions that- some were kept away feeling they cannot take em all in the staff and the scholars are to be congratulated on the excellent talent displayed on this occasion the proceeds for the evening amounted to 70 and will be devot ed to furnishing the new gymnasium at the school ballantrae rev alfred laycock will begin a course of special lenten services next sunday service to commence at 1030 am mrs h kirby is giving a quilting bee to the ladles aid at her home on tuesday next our deepest sympathy goes out to airs james gray in her recent ber- oavement eastern star carnival the fancy dress and oldtime car nival held in the arena monday even ing by the local eastern star chap ter was very well attended although the rough weather prevented the crowd from being much larger the number in costume was particularly good the judges were mrs l e todd mrs j a heise and mr ho klinck benj doten and family were awarded the 5 for having the larg est family on skates there being five of them while ben also cleaned up on a couple ot other prizes tor best fancy dressed man and for the old est skater in costume the other prizes wore course in dressmaking with miss russel mr and mrs keeping alice byrne and baby are here from fenelon falls visiting her old home at mr and mrs geo urquharts miss winnie silvester of toronto and miss bertie silvester of victoria bc visited over the week end with their cousin mrs a s leaney a c burkholder was in toronto on wednesday attending the annual conflab of standard bank man agers imr w h todd was called to kingston wednesday evening owing to the death of his eldest brother thomas aged 87 years mrs lemon baker is in toronto for a few weeks where she can be with her daughter mrs robt rat- cliff who is confined to the welles- ley hospital miss greta ratcliff has resumed her position as nurse in training at the guelph hospital after being name owing to the recent bereavc- nint in watsons obrien avenue mrs ralph burkholderunderwent a very serious operation on thurs day last in the wellesley hospital toronto her many friends will be glad to know that her condition thus far is favorable mrs burk holder is a daughter of the late wm pipher of ringwood miss may urquhairt who makes frequent visits to the general hos pital reports her father mr john urquhairt as about holding his own although perhaps weakened by the steady confinement despite his ad vance age mr urqunart when well never missed his daily exercise on wednesday mr and mrs w h clairk were in scorboro visiting at the old homestead where lives his youngest brother hugh and family who are about to leave the old farm home to live in aginoourt their sale is announced in this issue of the tribune register a number of citizens met last week at the home of mr jas mowat bringing with them good wishesand donations of different kinds to cele brate his 75th birthday among the useful presents given we noticed a the work of the kawanis club ot that city and makes complimentary reference to the vocal assistance given at one of their gatherings by miss ida davis daughter of a former resident ot this section mr
