stouffville when the news spread through out this locality last thursday after noon that mrs ross e ratclift was dead the wide circle of friends and indeed all who knew her were otruck with deep consternation and grief known only to be in good health such a turn in events proved one of the greatest shocks in a long time this ihapy and highly respected ir other of but 36 yeans of age passed away onty three hours after a baby boy was born to her the child one healthy lad is now in the care of miss ratoliff nurse in taluing and sister to the bereaved husband the funeral on sunday was one of the largest ever assembled in this locality following a short service at the late home 2 miles west of stouffville the remains were taken to the second markhaiu baptist church opposite the ratclift farm where divine service was conducted by pastor whitcombe and rev e c mcleod so great was the throng of mourners that a portion of them were requested to step outside the church to provide room for the casket and the immediate family and relatives many people were turned away unable to gain admit tance j jig pastor whitcombe in his message paid a handsome tribute to the christian life and character of the departed one speaking from person al knowledge of her unbounded faith in christ and of her christian ste wardship as a worker in the church hers was one of service and concern for all were given by mr and mrs george collard mrs s w hastings and mr noah stouffer following the seftvice the remains were lowered to their final resting i place in the little cemetery adjoining the church to the east where for 0 years many of the faithful of the second markham church found their final resting place grandfather and grandmother ratdtuf wjio were a- mong the pioneer settlers in these kiddvmessrs ed nighlind- aay ferguson fred steckley and ed clubine these also acted as flower bearers the late mrs ross ratellff whose maiden name was lula gertrude ctark was one of a family of seven children born to the late mrsclark land mr david iclark of whitchurch to her marriage six years ago to mr ratellff two chfldtren were born helen now nearly four years of age jand the new babe just born there also survives the sorrowing husband who is receiving the sympathy of everyone in his great affliction b- sldes her father mrs ratdtiff is also survived by an only sister mrshlsey of toronto and by four brothers namely bruce w clark and lome h clark both high scjhool teachers in toronto wilmot also of toronto elmer on the ojairk homestead in whitchurch and willard in western canada all excepting williard were in attendance at the funeral not only in tihe home will mrs ratellff be missed but in the work of markham second church her ser vices were always counted on in al most every branch of the churchs activity as a neighbor too will this brlghtyoung personage be missed anil the large funeral cortege on sunday further emphasizes the wideness of the friendship circle in whlqh she moved the bier was banked with beauti ful flowers the emblem of love and sympathy and included wreaths from whitchurch township council of which mr ratellff is a member the north york plowmens associa tion of which he is the president and from the following friends and rela tives of the bereaved family brother lome and family brother bruce and family father elmer and family brother wilmol and family sister elsie and delos robt ratellff and family mr and mrs ross wintarstoin dr and mrs s s ball mr and mrs g b thompson of holland landing mrs chapman and mrs jackson oi maple mr and mrs t b rae mr and mrs harvey wldeman and greta of toronto tho stouffvhle choral society indian road baptist church and calvary baptist churcji toronto 2nd mark ham mission circle 2nd markham bypu and the high school board of the township of vork the memorial service in memory of the late earl haig held on sun day afternoon last was attended by an audience that almost filled the tody of the spacious united church a number of members of the stouff ville and whitchurch veterans asso ciation were unable to be present owing to the funeral of the late mrs ross ratclift at the same hour this also was the reason the rev b c mcleod was absent the reverend gentleman having been pastor for some yeiara to the bereaved family the pulpit communion table and choir loft were draped with the union jack and on the communion table was an excellent portrait of the de ceased general the veterans had arranged for the printing of the order of service and this enabled the congregation to take part in the singing and to follow the same with interest punctually at 3 oclock the vet erans took their places in the first pews and the choir largely aug mented from the choral society filled the choir seats the pastor of the church was accompanied on the platform by rev j j roboins rect or of the parish church and councillor ward who was invited by the veterans to give the address by virtue of the fact that his son had served in the great war the singing was of an inspira tional character and the various hymns were splendidly rendered the address of mr ward was based on the 13th verse of the 29th chapter of the book of job and was highly spoken of by many who were present as a fitting and eloquent ad dress he referred to the late field marshall as a man who had followed in his masters steps he went a- bout doing good during the great war the british leaders were all men of great faith and the field marshall was one of them instead of retiring to bis estate after the war as he might have done and as many many generals have done he was ever alert to aid the soldiers helping tiieir cause in every way he could mr ward referel to hfe a a friend to the widows and fath- ciess ho marie widely known resident of this section passed away on thursday feby 9th when death claimed ed ward j c morris at the home of his daughter mrs a w storry at bloomington in his 76th year mr morris had been in ill health for some time and his recovery was despaired of some time ago born at altona a son of an irish father and a mother of uel stock be had a good foundation he lived at home until 53 years ago when he married jane stotts who predeceased him only last june it will be remem bered they celebrated their golden wedding day two years ago in splen did style the late mr and mrs morris lived for 35 years on the farm on the 9 th of whitchurch now occupied by herb burnett they also spent sevenall years in stouffville owning the home now dr storeys residence they are survived by eight child ren 16 grandohildren and eight goeat grandchildren the surviving members of the family are mrs w there was a very light billofaro for the stouffville council to deal with on thursday night when they met for the regular february meet ing reeve h w sanders was in the chair wjbile the members pres ent were councillors ward dows well and mckinnon councillor j borinsky was absent having been report on the audit of the town books and to show their good faith in the auditors their report was accepted without even looking over the aeport made the yeas and nays were demanded on a resolution submitted by coun cillor dowswell which read that all accounts coming before the council for payment be endorsed by some members of the council before pay ment councillor ward insisted that only the chairmen of committees should be authorized to sign these accounts mr dowswell also in sisted on the other plan but coun cillor mckinnon seconded the motion and voted forr it with the reeve not exercising his vote hence the motion carried the various committees or some member of tlhem are expected to certify to the correctness of each bill before being passed iby the whole council the fire brigade presented an account of 2850 for nineteen men in attendance at swifts garage fire this is at the irate of 150 per man and bi second item of 975 was pre sented for reeling hose council looked for some time at the latter item but concluded that it was justified and ordered it paid with the first item councillor dowswell sought the consent of council to have gravel placed upon certain
