that the mun icipality would receive any fines accruing from this source no action was taken at this meeting mr noah baker on behalf of the mennonite congregation asked that an electric ligh be plsced in the churoh driving shed for the conveni ence of the public who use their building for parking horses and vehicles councillor ward support ed the claims of the church on the grounds that farmers coming to town using these sheds spent their money here and were entitled to any accommodation we could give them councillor dowswell said he agreed with this sentiment but was afraid it would establish a precident and opposed a tree light on this ground then councillor borinsky sandwich ed in between the two opinions with the suggestion that they be charged halt price of a street lamp namely per year and this was put to r vote and carried providing the hydro commission will approve of the arrangement it is the intention to connect the shed to the street lamp system when it will and erect the stop signs which have been standing in the clerks office for a month wheel traffic is still busy and the stop street bylaw should be enforced it was decided to erect these signs at once provided the frost is not too great a hindrance the matter of cleaning up the clerks office came in for discussion and arrangements were made to have more shelving erected to place the accumulation of material in and if necessary someone will be engaged to scrub the place once or twice a month the clerk was instructed to engage help to put up the shelving the standing committees for the year were james church to the continuing presbyterians according to written agreement entered into the continu ing church is to pay to the unionists 1175 less 25 paid as rental and the unionists are to return half the chairs removed from st james church and an organ this agreement is to he effective as at june 1925 and means that the presbyterians are paying 1000 for the church building plus interest from june 1925 amounting to 175 while the unionists must forgo col- lectng rental for the three years this agreement must be executed in cash by june 1928 it has been signed by mr alex mitchell whom we understand wa3 authorized to act for the presbyter ian congregation in effecting a settle ment and the united church board gave their approval to the arrange ment at a meeting held on monday night it must now be ratified by the united church congregation at their annual meeting next week the settlement appears to meet with gen eral approval of members of both congregations who are to be con gratulated in being able to settle their differences in so amicable a manner cnr allowed to discontinue line councillors demanded chartered auditors hoard notify whitchurch township connlcl the new council at their meeting on friday evening came nigh intro ducing a new lot of auditors on the town books when the bylaw appolnt- j ing the officers for the year was uu- the newly elected council for the der discussion with councillor dows- township of whitchurch met at the we a chairman of the committee township hall on january 9th sub- 1 councillor borinsky enquired if it scribing to rhe declaration of office as follows morgan baker reeve herman kldd deputyreeve win crawford ross ratcliff and g w williams councillors the members addressed the council on the work of the year that lies before them an important order was read from the railway commissioners staling would not be a good idea to ap point a chartered accountant to audit the books and this was the signal for the opening of on interest ing dialogue the suggestion from councillor borinsky caused councillor dows well to say i think so too then councillor ward said he had l been a by several who felt that they consent to the canad an u wouifl bp bctter hayo tne books national railways abandoning that section of railway running be tween stouffville and mount albert and that they recommend to the governor in council to permit the same this will be a serious blow- on places like ballantrae but the audited by a chartered accountant i think it would be the right move he concluded reeve sanders said it would cost i a great deal more than councillors thought borinsky we get our books audi- ljllt hfted at the creamery for 25 and our auditor said he might be able to do barely more than a nickle a vote 75 80 40 4 5 50 are vainly awaiting snow for sleighing in order that they may do their winter teaming although past midwinter there is no sign of sleighing in ths section this lsth of january no one need ever forego the desire of contesting a municipal contest in stouffville on the ground that they do not wish to force an election nec essitating so much expense so long as charges are maintained at the present level for staging a local municipal battle although there were seven names on the ballot paper submitted to the ratepayers last new years day it only cost the taxpay ers 2650 to take this vote or an average of approximately 5c per ballot cast in toronto the charges average over 60c per voter so that stouffville gets in at a very nominal figure as there are many electors who believe their opinion is wor more than a nickle we imagine most of the ratepayers will be well satis fled the vote was taken then of course there is another angle to this questionaside from the financial aspect it is interesting to note that many of tho3e who are nominated for public office and who withdraw from the field state that they do so because they have no de sire to force an election upon the citizens they apnirencly have the idea that they are conferring a bene fit on the cljjtvrs by debarring them from the ippounlty of- votiug on the day set osid for the municipal elections this is a very mistaken idea by dropping out of the field and allowing other nominees to be elected by acclamation these citi zens are actually depriving their fel low ratepayers of what is their right and privilege farms was evidenced by the splendid turn out at the public meeting held in stouffville on tuesday afternoon engineer h e maddock of the hepc of ontario outlined to the gathering in a very explicit manner the various phases of current sup plied to farmers with costs and all other details mr maddock stated that the gov ernment is paying half the cost ot all lines built on the concession lines and known as secondary lines ones carrying 4000 volts also half cost of transformers and meters with this assistance the average cost of having light and power on a 100 acre farm is between 70 and 75 per year this would supply the the town in a day the same time he takes to do ours clerk dougherty reminded them that the town audit includes the school accounts as well dowswell if we can get it done for 25 im willing to get the char tered acountant to audit reeve sanders i think if you want chartered accountants you should get them after our auditors are through dowswell that would be a slam at our auditors it wouldnt do the reeve said that the creamery co chartered accountants to audit their books chiefly to make up their in come tax to which mr borinsky agreed but thought it the more necsesary in the case of the town as it was public business they were transacting reeve sanders- i move that mes srs w h clark and 71 watts be auditors and the motion carried with only one opposing vote mr
