the opening session advised the executive to meet once a quarter also assistant teach ers selected for each class in the s s which should both start and end on time giving a full teaching period this helped to create a reverence besides keeping every person good natured mrs edward wilson in a letter expressed regrets thatshe was prevented from being in attendance at the convention through illness and it was resolved to send flowers to her mr john phillips opened the afternoon session telling of the first convention which was also held in brougham forty years ago and out of all the numbers present only three men were alive today in his re marks he spoke of elijah and paul getting discouraged but seeing the multitudes they took cdtirage and he advised ss teachers to take courage and he even more faithful the report of the provincial con vention was given in the afternoon by miss m miller this was a most interesting account and proved ex ceptionally helpful rev mr owen of uxbridge gave an address on the seven steps in life during which he traced the different stages through which our boys pass and how the should be aided and helped in each how parents should aim to give their boys an education that will place them in the right calling for which they are best adapted the speaker also spoke on the in fluence of environment or the home on the boys character but said that throughout all the years christ should be placed first instead of lust and that if boys will use the talents given them god will do his part the address of the evening is the ss the place for evangelism was given by rev e osborn who said that the object of evangelism was not to save souls but also to redeem lives from destruction and regenerate them as habits are formed by boys ana girls during the years usually spent in the sunday school it was most import ant that teachers gave their scholars the best training possible towards good habits thanks was extended to mrs r miller and the claremont quartette for rendering of musical selections during the convention apprecia tion was also shown for the kind hospitality shown the delegates who were served meals in the town hall next years convention will be held in altona the fiftyseventh annual conven tion of the markham township re ligious education council was held in the united church stouffville on friday last week all sessions were unusually well attended the body of the church and gallery beinj well filled both afternooi and even ing the sessions were ably presided over by the retiring president mrs brownsberger the chief speakers for the afteicon were mrs f rao of willowdale who addressed the children and rev j c robertson of toronto who spoke on methods of teaching the lesson in the evening the church was packed to the gtllory to hear judge us mott of the juvenile court toronto deliver an address on our children it was full of spen- did thoughts practical experiences and helpful advice he said his re marks might better be styled things we appreciate in life but it was all good regardless of what the title might be judge mott re ferred to the mariner in which the industrial wizard and the farmer tackled the problem of turning raw material into the finished product these men are all studying how best they can turn the finished pro duct of the factory and field into urstclass finished article with least expense and in the least pos- blc time science lias been anple to farming and manufacturing but did you ever hear of science being pplied to the rearing of children in this we have been remiss in our duty there hay however been some research carried out in regard to developing character in children the child is bom with certain raw material the character is the finished product normal children are born with the necessary in stincts to develop this our duty is to take it into the home as par ents as teachers in t he sunday school and develop those instincts which are the gift of the divine the childs ideal is its mother fortunate that child whose mother is linked with the divine father becomes the ideal when the boy reaches about 12 years now he wants to be like dad it becomes fathers duty to introduce the boy to the outside world some of them are mighty incapable but fortunate the lad whose father had builded well among the natural instincts of the child are play and pugnacious- ness the former is a body builder and character builder also and the latter would ultimately be transfer ee against things they know are not right the only means of recompense said the speaker to forebear for the good we have done which is our in heritance is to pass on to our child ren that which we have received following judge motts address the new president was introduced in the
