usil conditions in canada today are good and steadily improving why freight rates have been reduced the cattle embargo removed jjw markets opened and the people can buy manufactured goods the tariff reductions have improvtrade and have not been excessive enough to injure industry 1 woolen mills are running double time in many towns such as renfrew asimcoe shoe factories are busy implement factories running full time all fause agriculture is prosperous premier mackenzie king by wise policies of retrenchment and trade dflelopment ha lifted canada out of the slough of despond in which premier meighft it mr meighens cure for trade depression is high protection at lejts his election cry even mr meighen knows the folly of such a policy because in 1920 when he was pri minister and on may 25th that year he spoke in the house of commons as follows i i v we never can have a high tariff in canada we cannot have a high tariff in canada for obvious reasons in the first place a high tariff is unsound in principle in that it tends to eliminate one of the factors of competition namely foreign goods foreign goods must be allowed to enter into competition under fair conditions in this or in any other country but the conditions under free trade or without protection are such that the foreign competitor has every advantage so i say we cannot have any immoderate or high tariff for the reason first that it tends to exclude that healthy ele ment of fair conditions namely foreign competition secondly we have in canada a territory of wide extent we have one por tion of canada newer than the other portion a more predomin atingly agricultural coijp to manufacturers and indus trial development andfuently the advantages of the tariff do not accrue to thenf as they ultimately will accrue to them they come moiately to one portion of this coun try than to another of these two reasons we must always have in thiscf more than a moderate tariff under any condition maintain the steady progress of prosperity in canada filing your vote for rt hon w l mackenzie king ss3bk 4vern this country reform campaign association newmarket ontario wwbfeiaasissiiijgj r
