ss lesson september 20 paul writes to th thessalonians- 1 thets chs 15 golden text in everything glvoj thanks 1 thess 5 18 analysis motives 16 and methods 712 of the cllsrstian mission introduction the letters of st paul to the thessalonians were writ ten and despatched within a year pos sibly within a period of six months after the visit to thessalonica as we saw the christian church at thes- salonica was no sooner founded than a storm ofpersecution gathered round it and beat with pitiless force against the infant community the continu- ance of this storm is one of the rea sons why st paul takes up his pen to write these letters of comfort and exhortation paul was now at cor- inth but hearing from timothy whom he had sent to thessalonica that the lamp of christian faith and love was still burning brightly in spite of dis couragements he sends a personal expression of thankfulness together with many counsels of wise exper ience his object is briefly to rally the faith and courage of the thessalonica christians to draw the community closer to himself and to sever it more completely from heathenism at the same time to comfort them with as surance regardiig the coming again of our lord 413 to 511 and to correct certain tendencies to unsettle- ment and idleness which had showed themselves in certain sections of the church in the course of the first letter st paul recalls his own visit to thessalonica and this recollection turning chiefly on his motives and methods forms our lessor today the letters to the thessalonians are the earliest writings of st paul and at the same time the first of our new testament books to be composed they are for this reason of very great his torical interest the date of writing was probaby ad 53 i motives op the christian mission 1g v 1 paul begins by reminding the thessalonians that in spite of perse cution and suffering his appearance at thessalonica had been fraught with wonderful results v 2 he had suffered before and very shamefully at philippi and therefore had earned the right to speak to the thessalonians without any fear moreover when resistance and opposition developed at thessal onica it did noc take paul by surprise ijg was expecting it and was pre pared v 3 pauls exhortations at thes salonica were not of deceit for he spoke the very truth of god they were not of uncleanness for paul had no mercenary or selfish motives of any kind they were not of guile for paul had no ulterior interests to serve but laid the innermost recesses of his soul open to the light as he called the thessalonians to repentance and to faith in the lord jesus christ as saviour and judge of all v i paul spoke as a man who felj god liad called him to preach the gospel he was conscious in gods sight of a very honoring but very solemn responsibility therefore he made it his object never to please men never that is to seek popularity for selfish ends but always to make the will of god his one reason for every thing vs 5 g paul did not flatter nor did he make the gospel a pretext or screen for obtaining financial assist ance or reputation or anything of that kind he takes god to witness that he never required any kind of support at tho hands of the thessal onians though asan apostle of christ he might have done so without dis credit ii methods op the christian mis- sion 712 v 7 paul knew that in a young christian community the character of the missionary is allimportant and he recalls the patience and gentleness with which ho had nursed the souls of his converts into christian faith and love v 8 in his yearning over their eouls he gave them not only the gos pel but ih a very real sense his own self as well he loved them devoted ly and counted no sacrifice too great to make for the sake of bringing them into the kingdom v 9 ho recalls how hard he work ed at his manual trade of tentmaker while at thessalonica all day he wrought and at night his lamp was still burning in the workshop and all that ho might preach the gospel freely on sabbaths and onother oc casions not requiring any monetary aid from the people among whom ho labored vs 10 13 as for his moral and religious life and character tho thes salonians saw for themselves and god also saw how full of holy zeal and earnestness ho had shown himself no one at thessalonica could point tho finger at him no father ever labored with a more selfsacrificing love to improve his childrens characters than paul did rmong his thessalonian con verts as he counseled encouraged and warned v- 12 and what was it all for simply for this that the thessalon ians might walk worthily of god that having been called by god into his kingdom and having been shown his purpose for them having seen his glory that is the glorious things he had in store for those who love him they might order their- lives in such a way as to be worthy not reflecting rny discredit upon the love of christ their saviour vhat a message these thessal onians had been not so long before in heathen darkness they had been benighted pagans living gross and superstitious lives and now they are called to make god their example and to believe that he has made them sharers in his own kingdom and in his own glory r oats are so universally selffertil ized that in a number of pureline cultures grown side by side for years only onu hybrid was found wtntms this a nervous breakdown supposed to re sult from too strenuous mental effort others are fagged so they say from too much hard labor the fact is that it is rare very rare indeed that anyone is injured from overwork either mental or physical and espe cially mental the injury comes from worry like a thief worry steals in and saps ones vitality but why allow worry to ruin health and to destroy peace and happiness usually one worries about things he cannot help many farmers are always worrying about tho weather yet they cannot change it in the least it is too dry or too wet for best re sults storms may ruin crops and buildings and destroy live stock yet it is known from the beginning that such things may happen one should use his best judgment and energy to prevent loss from na tural causes but when they do come there is no help if tho hay or the wheat gets wet why should one make ground that would not yield anything himself ill from worrying over the matter f it would bo better to go fish ing and let it dry the energy thus conserved would more easily care for it when it does dry and it will worry often comes from fear that this or that thing may happen one makes an investment and then be comes anxious for fear that it will go wrong we should use our best judg ment in making investments then we should remember the od saying be a good loser which is but another way of saying dont worry- some- say they arc so constituted in the way of crops every day the huckster calls at my home and takes away with him a case of eggs for which he pays mo 660 now that the hatching season is
