limits of its resources and is applying to the government of that province to save it from a debenture debt of about 700000 nearly half of which is now long overdue as we have ex plained in this column before dur ing the great westward movement battloford spent municipal funds on public buildings in a lavish way then came a railway along the north bank of the river and a new town sprang up that outrivalled the old in growth and this attracted so many of its citizens that old bat tleford dwindled down to a popula tion of less than hiuo the small population couldnt meei the in terest payments alone a legal dispute of interest to not a few farmers especially in mark- ham township where a similar dis pute arose some time ago is now be fore the court in st thomas a farmer named john smith has 32 rods of osage orange hedge in front of his farm the hedge has been there for 25 years and now that emphasis is being laid upon good roads the ceunty authorities ask that the hedge be removed because of the fact that it causes snow block ades in the winter and last year it cost the county 80 to keep the road clear in front of this hedge and another the county seeks under the removal of obstructions from public highways act 19 20 to have the hedge torn down and the good roads committee has offered to replace the hedge with a wire fence but the owner thinks the hedge is an ornament to his farm and adds to its value and he insists that if it be necessary to remove it he should be awarded damages the issue in this case is far reaching and would possibly affect many farms there arecedar and spruce hedges in many places in the same condition as this orange hedge and possibly they add hundreds of dol lars value to the farms and while their removal may be adjudged nec essary in order to keep a good road open yet that removal does certain ly damage the farmer who owns them no wonder the judge has taken timeto consider this case bylaw no- a bylaw providing for a fixed assessment for the lands buildings and equipment of walter muston sons nickle axi bureau editor mcdonald of the chesley enterprise a former liberal mpp has this to say on the present liquor situation in ontario auorreyfjeneral nickle is doing his best to enforce the ontario tem perance act he has been handi capped because the province has no power to close the breweries distill eries or wholesale export houses the wholesale houses get clearance papers for shipments of liquor to cuba or united states and in many instances use the stock for supply ing ontario bootleggers jacques bureau minister of customs has been appealed to by the attorney- general to assist in the enforcement of the ota but he stands for the letter of the law and says that so long as the excise is paid liquor may be cleared for us or cuban ports it is quite evident the minister of customs is unsympathetic and will lend no help to the ontario govt what makes the situation more diffi cult is that our provincial police cannot have access to excise inform ation which would make it easier for tliem to stop unloading liquor car goes ostensibly meant for cilba or us arid selling to bootleggers in this province- saskatchewan was up against this same export problem a few yoare ago the liquor export houses were found to be doing an illegal business with men across the lines in us whore the trafflc was outlawed the legislature of saskatchewan ap pealed to the federal govt to close up the export warehouses and they were closed up there is no doubt that this question will comeup at the next session of the ontario leg islature the brewers and distillers will have more influence in the on tario legislature than in saskatche wan nevertheless we hope to see n resolution pass to havo the domin ion house strengthen the hands of those who are trying to enforce the law in this province then it will be up to the king govt to back up jacques bureau and lose several ridings in ontario at the next gen eral election or to lend its aid in putting the clamps on the export nouses which are bringing the ot a into contempt by debauching the community through being the nourcc of supply for the bootleggts jacques bureau will pnd that al though ontario is mnt all of canada it is the backbone of the country and will not stand for his allowing hindrances that makes one of our laws very difficult to enforce law- abiding citizens of ontario are be hind nickle in his pnviseworthv efforts to make the ota more easily enforced whereas walter muston sons hae been and are carrying on business as
