an address and a beautiful cut gttss dish mrs morris had served as president and a director of the organization the friends and neighbors of the locality also united in extending a fitting farewell to these very excellent neighbors they went in a body to the morris home and presented the departing ones with a handsome electric lamp and an appreciative address which reads as follows we your neighbors and friends have convened at your home tonight to bid you a kind farewell and wish you god speed in your new home it was with regret wis learned of your intended departure during the many years you nave lived in the neighborhood you have proven yourself a true friend and neighbor to all of us the many acts of sympathy and kindness that you have always been so ready to ex tend to us will long be remembered your cheerfulness and agreeableness has always been a great asset and help to the social life of the com munity and as you are about to leave us we ask you to accept this electric lamp not fpr value but as a token of our appreciation of a good neighbor may you remem ber that wherever duty may call you you have the best wishes of all of us also that there is a warm begging for a buyer at the above j prjee then vv s cook listened to his plea and made cue bid there was no one ottered more and the 125 tons wore knocked down by the sheriff to the lone binder the sale was held on thursday afternoon of fast week at the pre mises lately occupied by morden loiisborough stouiiville and al though it was poorly advertised a fair number of people assembled to judge whether or not the sheriff had any lualitications as an auctioneer they came away with the impression tf at anyone ought to be able to get people to bid at least st a ton for coal the trouble was the whole 12 tons had to be taken by one man but apparently there are people vno wouldnt buy a coal mine if ottered one at half price another stipula tion was that it should he moved in one weok but mr cook who ownos the premises said lie wouldnt press tor a few days in case someone else wished to buy hut this didnt in crease the bids and the sale was closed accordingly a quantity of grit for fowl certainty his friends tell us they also wish it pointed out that the work mr leary did in open ing the townline to ronge street is worthy of the highest commenda tion the expenditure of approxi mately 15 000 mentioned in our last issue js divided equally between whitchurch and markham and is spread over two or three years ana it is therefore argued by those fav orable to the new road that the cost per year is very insignificant the people of oormley section are anxi ous for a through road to yonge street leary was instrumental in keeping the cost of this undertaking down where it is hut if he monday even ing councillor alex scott touched off the fuse vhenie wanted to know if the ratepayers were to be provided with an itemized statement of the 511000 expended on the hydro sys tem this summer councillor siiversidesjumped right in here and said one must be given but clerk urquhart explained that the courfcil granted authority to pay all wages fo councillor lee who handed it out to che men and the financial report would therefore not show the amount of money re ceived by each workman mr silversfdes further demanded the statement urging that many ratepayers wanted it and were already asking for t i mr leo taunted the former speaker with saying he had a chance to build the line and he should have did it instead of standing back offering criticism the reeve reitterated the statment or the clerk that mr lee paid the workmens money and what each man received would not be put in the printed statement he promises however to bring along the figures to the nomination meeting and any who wanted to hear them could have a chance mr lee said everything was straight and above board and there was nothing to hide wbile mr su- ersides declared there had been great waste in men loafing and drawing pay for it the dialogue was brought to a close with the understanding that the pay roll would hot be published excepting in bulk form but that the reeve would be pre pared tohand out any figures asked for messrs dan cook and isaac bar- key were again before council re questing a sidewalk from eddaveys house north to the foundry along the west side of dr freels property they had an opinion from t h len nox stating that dr freels name to the petition previously signed was binding even though not opposite a seal but the doctor put in a pro viso that he would not shovel- snow or pay more than 2 per year towards cost of the walk the matter was referred back when it is expected a settlement will be arrived at in the near future e pennock complained about the darkness on sin on sunday evening vice was rampant in another section of the community lo a deplorable degree constable joe nendick on instruc tions from town officials raided hie club house at uie bowling green and caught red handed between 10 and 20 young men engaged 111 gambling in the form of shooting crap the offenders broke ihe padlock and gained an entrance they lighted the place with hash lights and proceeded to spread the gold the tingling coin led the cop to the den and like a thief in the night he pounced upon the boys with such suddenness that a real commotion ensued lights out a number made good their escape but a dozen less fortunate had thuir names recorded no court action we understand will be taken this time but the con stable declares that this is final and if it becomes his duty to take the boys in charge again ho will qrrest the entire lot not even the parents are to bo notified this time 1 with such incidents as this happening on a sabbath evening in a community of 1100 people with seven churches there should bo some serious thinking going on then some real action to provide the young men with better employment only last week the ladies aid of the methodist church discussed the matter pointing out the idle young men lining the street sunday even ings as a bad omen sure it was but what is wanted is united action it is becoming increasingly difficult to break these young fellows in very small groups to attend this or that- church community action is wanted the responsibility doesnt rest altogether on the church for in this case probably twenty homes were unaware of where the boy spent sunday evening county police reorganized about the most important bust ness that passed the county council sessions in toronto last week affect ing stouflville was the revision of the police force of the county a complete change was made which should work out to the decided favor of such municipalities as stouffville at the present time this municipality gets little or no assis tance from county police other than that paid for in lees made from a case yet other municipalities adja cent to toronto receive assistance almost daily under the new system each muni cipality will maintain its own police with the exception of six men to be hired by the county who would be available here if called upon at present it cost the county 20000 for policing one township adjacent to the city and stouffville is called upon to pay her proportion ate cost of this the new regulations adopted by the county embodies tne following changes 1 a that a reduction of the sal aried police force be made to one in the north with an assistant during the summer months one in the cen- treand four in the south of the county b all cobs provided with neces sary uniforms and telephones in their homes each constable to pro vide bis own automobile and the county to make each man an allow ance per mile to cover the cost of use for such automobile c to dispose of the automobiles now owned by the county and an arrangement made with one or more public garages for the use of high powered cars when the necessity arises d we rurther recommend that the local municipalities provide their own police protection which we think will be more satisfactory and economical to all concerned all such police to be under the control of the police commission of the county breezes from another quarter gormley ont dec 3 1923 to the editor of tue stoullvillo tribune dear mr editor permit me space in your valuable paper to reply to part of an article appearing in your issue if nov 29th re election breezes from whitchurch in winch it staled some ratepayers criticise councillor leary tor his activities in getting the townline road graded through to yonge street and that the cost to the ratepayers of whit church was nearly 15000 now mr editor 1 wish to state that this is a grossly misleading statement used for a purpose as a matter of fact it has not cost tne ratepayers of whitchurch one halt that amount and ali the grading is completed and all culverts put in place none of vine are less than 30 feet in length ami some as long as io feet there has besri considerable said about the unsurmoiiriiabie grades by these former critus but the writer wishes to say that h has driven from one ok of it to the other in a car which has served its full apprentiifsiij of 7 years and thatlie had not resort to any other gear than high in going over that road this should be sufficient to convince the most sceptic as to the grade now as the space at my disposal will not permit me to go to any further length 1 would ask you to be present on nomination day when i shall otter myself as candi date for deputyreevo and any of the ratepayers wishing any further information on this subject or on anyof the questions over which we have jurisdiction 1 shall deem it a pleasure to discuss them before tne ratepayers trusting mr editor you will give this the same prominent place in your valuable
