of the absence ot the reeve in toronto this week the re gular meeting for monday evening was held on saturday night it was described as the busiest meeting in two years but we cannot vouch for this statement we do know how ever that there was some real enter tainment provided jas ratcliff president of the board of trade on behalf of that body requested a grant of 100 with which the board wished to use a portion to pay their taxes which are now overdueamoun ting to some forty odd dollars dr sangster f c hessel and a v nolan members of the executive also spoke briefly in support ot giv ing assistance to the board who are endeavoring to maintain a public play grounds for the general use of the community dr sangster said he would make a present of his pro perty adjoining the present grounds to the association so soon as they cleared the indebtedness off the por tion already assumed he declar ed the council would be doing only a small thing to make the grant there was no personal gain to any one and he only desired to see the place developed for the general good of the community mr hessel reminded the fathers that memorial gates had already been built there and he would be greatly surprised if a citizen would come forward that would condemn the proposed grant the reeve intimated that such a thing as a grant was illegal and in answer to this dr sangster said he would stand between them and any loss- sustained if their action were attacked from a legal point of view the reeve also suggested that the board sell the lower portion of the grounds then they could pay oft their indebtedness councillor silversides stated that a similar request for a grant was turned down last year but when men like dr sangster came forward willing to give property valued at say 300 or 400 tor the benefit of the whole community he favored assistance from the council we must have grounds for our children to play he declared and i believe we should help these men who should not be taxed at all for a pub lic grounds councillor beebei think we had better leave the matter over until a later time mr hessel but we need the money to pay our taxes right now and if you dont provide it someone will have to put their hand down in their pocket and pay councillor lee opposed a grant and the reeve later in the evening declared he bad been warned that if a grant was made exception would be taken to it and therefore he woud not support giving the as sistance asked for the post office condemned it was more in i the liature of a love feast that the vnedieal fraternity approached the councik dr bau moh was supported by drdales and dr freel andj eich aired their views on the matten respecting the post office they hfeid that it was a menace to the community to allow business to be carried on in the present quarters and they supported the stouffville board ot health in condemning the building these gen tlemen also took the opportunity to voice opinions against the malicious reports sent here hy inspector sutherland and another official which they termed as trumpedup reports and believing the truth dr dales said the office was a place to disseminate the flu and other diseases while dr freel character ized the place as very drafty like the reports from inspector sutherland and the architect dr ball then drafted a resolu tion which was passed by the coun cil calling upon the provincial board of health to send an officer here to inspect the place with a view to having them support the action of the local board of health other resolutions passed dealt with the reports which the premier had pre pared for the town from mr suther land and also from the architect of the public wrks dep there were termed as an insult to the com iiunity and absolutely void of the facts and calling upon the post office iispector and mr hastings of the public works to come out here and personally inspect the situation uncollected taxes 000 isaac itcamar tax collector pre sented roll which showed nearly 600 worth of taxes unpaid 200 of this was against the old barrel fac tory 72 against the bee co and 45 against the stouffville park the remainder was against private individuals this return is practic ally the same as last year iri respect to the amount uncollected the fire truck fire chief joe mertens presented a report which showed that subscrip tions amounting to 47050 had been promised toward a fire truck and he estimated a chassis would cost 530 with an additional 60 for irons and body he requested council to make a grant no action was taken it is felt by some members that the addi tion of a truck to the fire hall under the iconditions one would have to be maintained here would not add to the improvement of our fire risk but rather it might add to the ex penses of the fire department the bylaw providing for the 11- 000 for hydro purposes as passed by the people last month was given third reading and is now law a grant of 525 was made for public library purposes which is equal to last years amount ah members were present except ing councillor alex scott who is ill reeve morden presided and the fol lowing accounts were passed f pratt board
