ontario league and the durham and ontario league have had their meetings and drawn up their schedules for the coming sea son the scarboro league in which whitby played last year has as yet done nothing whitby represents tives are anxious to start something and hare been trying to find out whether the league is defunct or only slow in reorganizing at their annual meeting the ontario base ball association passed a residence rule which makes it necessary for all players wishing to play ball in a certain town to be a resident in that town on january 1st of that year otherwise the team cannot compete in the finals this ruling does not affect whitby which does not import players but it strikes most of the other teams in the league hard for agincourt birch cliffe unionville and others draw on toronto to make up teams consequently it is just a question if the scarboro league will come to life for the 1923 season if there is no scarboro league whitby will in all probability endea vor to get a berth with the tri- county league in the north this league at first only embraced a few of the towns around uxbridge and stouffville but now extends from orillia on the north to woodville on the south taking in markham beaverton cannington sutton sun derland stouffville and port perry they play pretty good ball in the north and if whitby enters the league there should be some excit ing contests in the local park whitby have all their old standbys to depend on and lots more play ers coming on the only draw back to entering the league is the travelling expenses which will be high but if the team gets plenty of patronage the burden will not be great on wednesday afternoon this week the marriage was solemnized of miss maggie grove daughter of mr levi grove altona to mr harvey davis meeting j h ratcliif was chosen to fill the office of president caused by the iesiguaton of dr ball this left vacant the vicepresidents chair which was then filled by dr sang- ster both on unanimous votes by an unanimous vote the board declared in favor of holding a ban quet in honor of our townsman robt miller who is head of the canadian national exhibition an honor which has come to no other municipality outside toronto the date proposed for the banquet is friday april 20th it is intended to hold the affair in ratcliffs hall for which the detail will be left in the hands of the board of trade executive there will probably be about 200 in attendance including members and guests a mild furor was caused when dr sangster rose and read two let ters concerning a new post office for this town he said the premier had caused to be sent the report of the local post office inspector for the district a sutherland of toronto and a report made by an architect from the department of public works who visited the town only a fewweeks ago both these reports frowned on such a thing as building a post office here and it appeared as though they actually went out of the way to present reports that would make it easier for the govern ment to refuse the demands for such a building the architect re ferred to the net revenue to the government from the local office as being 3000 and as if that were not enough to warrant a decent place to transact business the re port didnt state however the fact that the net revenue exceeded the gross receipts or were anout equal the gross receipts of markham post office where a modern new building had been erected it was taken from the letters read that so far as stouffville was con cerned there is no ntw office to be built at the present time at least however prominent liberals in cluding dr f a dales voiced strong protests which finally took form in a resolution drafted by dr ira freel and passed by the meeting the doctors resolution was to the effect that the board of trade re gister strong protests against the contents of the communications as read by dr sangster or at least part of them which is- not according to fact and if the requirements of the community are not to be attended to by the government the citizens will feel that a great injustice is being done them which will ultim ately react against the present gov ernment the war veterans were granted the use of the park grounds for their annual celebration on may 24 the matter of the annual cele bration to be held on july 2nd was discussed and it is planned to arrange a particularly strong list of attractions for this year a neighboring town faaving cut in our date it will necessitate extra effort being put forth to keep stouffvilles big dayjor its people the stand ing committees for the year were appointed and some of these will start at once to plan their program for the second of july celebration the committees parks commit tee dr sangster n mclean ae booth
