fleischer pastor one of the most important parts of a students training is to our minds that of oratory the orator is the mouth of a nation those who attended the oratorical contest in the hall on friday evening will realize that this subject is not being neglected in the local continuation school in point of speeches one who should knowvvouched the opin ion to us that the speakers or some of them excelled anything previ ously given on these occasions by the pupils sickness and bereave ment prevented two of the contest ants from taking part reducing the number to seven or four girls and three boys the judges were rev ryoung rev w m mcguire and rev g e coulter these men found it diffi cult to place the awards in respect to the girls the boys being judged separately in the girls contest winnie hutchinson was given first prize her subject was the grand old union jack on which she dilated for 10 minutes she spoke well and was entirely free from any evidence of memorizing her remarks the second prize winner jean hes se used good judgment in the se lection of her subject the value of opportunity it was one that re quired considerable thought and research work all of which was well presented the time occupied for its presentation was seven minutes dorothy lawson the third winner strangely enough selected the same subject as the first winner the union jack and she spoke for 12 minutes each of i these two speak ers described the formation of the three crosses which compose the jack but outside this their material did not conflict greatly enna helse the first speaker was ajso good and came in for honorable mention while her subject was somewhat con- tentiousbeing on the mothers pen tion act her remarks were convinc ing and would have been an acquisi tion to supporters of the act on the floor of the legislature enna spoke for ten minutes in a manner that might place her in the ranks of an agnes mcphail canadas first woman mp in the boys contest lome baker won first using the subject alaska while he seemed to have his subject more in hand than the other two contestants his chief weakness was in the fact that he ap peared to read most of- his address which detracts from any speakers remarks dave galloway captured second prize in a 21 minute address on the progress of navigation since its earliest history dave must have a good memory for he got off a lot of material in that 21 minutes there was a trace of recital in his remarks which coupled with its length no doubt barred him from first money f judd was awarded third prize for his speech on telephone in which he gave the history and present mag nitude of the system he spoke for the normal time of ten minutes rev robt young announced the awards and explained the difficulty in choosing between the girls they were all so good several drills and piano duets were rendered between speeches while rev mr mcleod of the bap tist church acted aschairman in an able and affable manner in presenting the prizes drsmith bestowed great credit on mrstouffer principal of the continuation classes for pushing the whole affair to such ju- successful issue in the face of much sickness which laid aside for the time being his assistant miss mcklnnon the prizes were donated by dr smith and dr ball and were cash awards the two firsts being 5 gold pieces while these contests are a direct benefit to the pupil they are also a treat for the community and we hope to hear more of them in the future arker is visiting reel has returned alifornia hear miss martha ist end is quite ill l of in the stouffville rink last week in which henry brillinger came out as best man when he de feated three different sets in the preliminary game frank rowbotham lost to mr brillinger in a mighty close contest in the first round harry brillinger had a strong rink and came out victor over j s doughertys lineup harry perry also had high hopes of the final out come but although his name is on pieces of silver captured in former days he was defeated in the second round by the ultimate winner in the first round he wipped out c armstrongs rink while henry bril linger defeated dr sangster and geo simpson topped w muston perry and h brillinger emerged victors from the next round and played off for the honors which brillinger won by 10 to 5 shots notes on the game henry brillinger showed class in winning this bonspeil but he seems to be used to them and is now eligible for entry at the big speil in winnipeg had dr sangster more timie he would make a different tally in the scoring j s dougherty is a good curler but his friends say he throws too many matches on the ice it is rumored that mr muston will have a trolley car running from his house to the rink when hydro is installed
