spent a couple of days with their aunt mrs quantz of the 7th line the patrol system wisconsin has adopted a systemof roadimprovement that is deserving of consideration the state trunk lines are maintained by the counties it the expense of the state the money being secured from the pro ceeds of the automobile license fees whlh are set aside for that purpose should the county fail to maintain its share of the system properly the state highway commission withholds payment and if this fails it has hie uower to perform the maintenance and charge the cost to the county the maintenance problem of the wis consin highways has been solved i b means of the patrol system by which sections of varying length depend ing on the character of the roadwa are placed in charge of patrolmen who are responsible for their sec tions to the officers in charge of the roadwavs in wisconsin on oooo miles of highway about 4s0 patro sections have been established vary ing in length from six to twenty miles the motor truck is extensl- velv used the patrolmen are secured by advertising in local papers they are required to furnish a good team and wagon those that fail to do their work efficiently are promptly discharged a ii hirst state high- vav engineer says that in general the patrolmen have more than justi fied expectations and few have had to be replaced mr hirst believes the gravel road to be most satisfac tory he says we have found that the most satisfactory roads to main tain are the gravel roads we have scarified many miles of old gravel roads and at a cost of 200 or less per mile have produced a surface very satisfactory and esy to main tain the more experience we have with gravel the more convinced we are that it is the lowest cost surfa ced road both to build and maintain and much superior to waterbound macadam we believe that the par ticles of gravel in the top 4 inches of a gravel road should not be lar ger than one inch and we would crush even finer if it wore not so expensive to produce fine crushed gravels gravel roads give the best and smoothest service without sur face treatments if it is necessary to treat them to eliminate dust use very light oils and dont try to build up a protective coat in view of the failure of the sta tute labor system to furnish good roads the patrol system is worthyof consideration in ontario for it ap pears to have the advantages of pro per supervision fixed responsibility and continuous care of the roads a hospital doctor writes in the ontario post that one of his pat ients had the flu he was walking around wearily when he was asked what was wrong he said ah done had de spanish flu that so he was asked what is the spanish flu like sam the flu said sam dont youall know what de flu is why its a disease dat makes
