v h i s ac kar 8tajjlet8 lovi 8toby a romantic tale lo uremia the gtnl eiplortr a little clomp of dab men sat over a late anpper in a new york cafe the other night and bstveen the grilled marrow base and bus told odd nits of their variegated experience they are all wellknown men and have never been particularly bothered with the basinet grind of life moat of them are well on toward 60 bat if all the experiences and yarns related at that table that night ooold be accepted literally they had jammed 100 very rapid years into their lives suddenly one of the gcoap raised fals hat from his forehead and taming down the leather band inside he polled a clipping from a newspaper lit me read yon thb gentlemen will yon he said very pleasantly it isnt long and it tells a volume it is a complete romance in it- u then he read in a well modulated iice this when stanley was in this coon vitjt won after hia discovery of livingstone ue was f nilcheeked rosy and his hair dark and handsome when next he cune alter bla memorable trip through the heart of the durk continent the ruddy hue of his face was gone and his beautiful hair was nearly white but the brightness of his eyes was not dimmed and the alert and sinewy limbs were asjagile as of old he baa borne privations and great hardships well bat they have left their mark on his face his ooaatenance and bead are old long before their time the clnb man then went on to relate to his attentive listeners what he said was the true meaning of the newspaper clipping he had jest read he prefaced his remark by stat ing that the words he had just read were from noah brookss artlole in the february st nioholas entitled the white pasha he said ho had carried the newspaper clip- pingin his hat from the day it was published because it recalled to him an experience in henry m stanleys life which very few ont- fcide of his intimate circle of friends knew he ded that a cer tain very charming lady would fully appreci ate everything that he was about to tell at one time she was a belle and was known in sooioty she was a most lovable woman and very attractive she la now a young matron with little sprigs of innocence and misohlevousness clustered about her one thing was certain the club nun de clared henry m stanley had not passed a single day in the last fifteen years without thinking ot her in the dark and unfathom able j ungles df africa her face had bean with him on the desert with the fieroe white heat beating npon him he had had memor ies of her he is a bachelor 49 years old and he will nover marry the young mat ron now lives in chicago and her brother is seen on broadway on any bright afternoon the white hair and the pallid oheek that noah brooks speaks of so the story teller asserted were not altogether due to stanleys privations on the congo it was about 1876 that mr stanley came to this obuntry after his discovery of livingstone four years be- store he had started out to find the lost ex- plorer not a word had been heard from livingstone in nearly two years there had been rumors that he had been and fame that had already corns to him time ran on and there were not anywhere two happter souls than henry m stanley and his prospective bride bat with livingstone dead there were constant and argent demands npon him to resume the exploration of africa at last he consented to make another jiamey it was to be a short one he told his sweetneart and with it would end his career as an african explorer anyboay can imagine the loving tender ness with which hnry m stanley and the girl be loved parted continued the club man there were tears on her part and tender comforting word for his share of that tkyiko experience they were to write by evory steamer and for two years the happiest and tenderest correspondence passed between the yonng lovers lite in november 1874 stanley arrived at zuizibar and began the arrangement for his trip inland the little lady in the fifth avenue mansion anxiously read the des patches about her lover and was cheered by some of the heaviest letters which ever came through the new york post offue she was delighted beyond expression when the cable announced that stanley had launched the little boat in which he circumnavijtated nyaoza lakv and had named it the lady alice that was her christian name with a lovers eagerness he wrote to the fair one what he had done and hia last let ter before he left civilization told her to be of good oheer he said that he didnt ex pect that his task would be difficult and he spoke of the time when his journey would be ended and he would return to her rloh and with his days as an explorer ended forever he was on the congo river for nine months and reached the atlantic ooast in 1877 he arrivel in london early in 1s77 and eagerly glanced over the pile of letters awaiting him there were a dcz in or more in the handwriting of his betrothed running up to november 1876 at that time he had reached nvaogwa the farthest northern point attained by livingstone or cameron the letters ceased in that month down deeper in the pile was a letter from a new york olub man which told stanley that his betrothed had been married early in 1877 to a gentleman from miohigan the highest honors were showered upon stanley but he grew listless and apparently without ambition his friends say he was stunned at the shock he had reoeived he roamed about london and his hair daily grew whiter and whiter and his faoa more pallid he went back to afrioa and spent five years there and first appeared in new york again in 1886 he only remained hero a few weeks and then started on his present journey a strange case of aphasia a case of aphasia i reported from part which came under treatment of prof charcot the celebrated physician for nervous disorders a man aged sixty strong and apparently in full health s lost all power over his vocabulary and some curi ous phases were noticeable the patient was master of three languages his native french eogiish learnt during a residence oi seventeen years in north america and spanish through hia marriage with a native of that country he lost bis command of these several languages in the inverse chron ological order ot their acquisition as follows spanish deserted him first eogiish he only retained in snatch phrases french remained in his memory so as to serve him fairly bat the last two were frtquently mixed like latin and eogiish in the mind of dr wen dell holmes celebrated late latin tutor the sfnictlon was ascribed to a softening in the region ot the third left lobe of the brain through methodical practice in conversation the patient regained his normal power week by week recovering bis languages in the following order french english spanish development of goal in canada i killed by hostile 8avaoe9 and his friends in eogland were anxious to learn the fate of thu man who had devoted nearly thirty years of his life to unravelling the mysteries of the interior of africa stanley was selected by james gordon ben nett to take an expedition into afrioa and learn the fate ot livingstone he was then 30 years old and full of pluck and determin ation he had been in the confederate army and when taken prisoner by the united slates troops he volunteered as a sea man in the federal navy he was spoken of at the time as brave modest and generous but with a roving disposition and above all a determination to make his mark in the world only stanley himself oan tell of the destitution and the hardships that he exper ienced in his search for livingstone bat on that memorable day in november 1871 when at ujijt on the shore of lake tangan yika he found the great scotchman and nonchalantly lifting his cap to him said dr livingstone i persume he became equally famous with tho doctor and knew that his name would go down through the centuries on his return to eogland the fetes and the banquets given in his honor and the glorification of bis name were only intertupted by the death in africa and tho burial in westminster abbey of dr living stone stanley was a pall bearer at the funeral of the great exploror it was said at the time that the mantle of tho dead man had fallen npon the young and ambitious stanley he was on the top tang of tho ladder of fame but his olosest friends at the time have since frequently remarked that stanleys marked charaoteristlo was a cynicism that was almost unbearable and onaooonntable he was 32 years old the queen had pre sented him with diamonds and he had been 81notjlably honored by statesmen and the great men of the royal geographical society his nam was known all over the clvilzid world and distinction and renown awaited him innew york when be arrived here a few months later stanley hadnt been in new york very long before bit dab frleads remarked that he was partial in his visit to a certain mansion on fifth avenue he had been well received in new york society and although he was not particularly endowed with this worlds goods he was a handsome young fel low ana tho yonng ladles of society found blm most congenial at one of the homes be visited there was a petite brunette who interested yonng stanley from the first bonr that he saw her her fathers home on fifth avenue was one of the most attrac tive of cpota for young stanley after the in troduction he would steal away from olub friends to make frequent calls on the little queen of that charming home the young lady herself began to blush when the servant announced her handsome young visitor and she soon began to look for his calls stanley was the sort of a young man to be interest ing to most young ladles he was a hand some fellow a fine conversationally and he was particularly attractive in the gallant and reverential politeness which always marked his conduct before the fair ones his visits to the fifth avenue mansion be came morci frequent and his attentions to tho black- eyed little lady more marked and pretty soon stanleys friends learned that tho young couple wero engaged stanley frequently said in those days that he was ready to settle down and have a winsome wife and a modest home he seemed to be quite contented to rest then with the name it is well known to geologists that in many parts of western canada there are extensive coal deposits the successful work ing of which must be of great importance in the development of the imperial trsffio through the dominion and on the paoifio a large block of land in which are thick and extensive seams of anthracite coal has lately been worked by a canadian company the canadian anthracite coal company limited in the cascade distrioe of the bow river pass with excellent results the land covers the oroppings of the veins which dip from 32 to 60 in the side of the moun tains whioh rise trom 600 feet or 600 feet to 2000 feet above the oroppings a tun nel 209 feet long has been driven and this is 45 feet above the water level and cuts through 32 seams of ooal three of these seams are being worked the jj overlying seam measures about nine feet of which seven feet are ooal the middle seam has from three feet to three feet six inches of clean hard coal and the underlying seam is about five feet eight inches with ten inches of slate near the oentre of the seam these are the only seams as yet practically tested but from them about 16000 tons of coal have been taken and shipped to the pacific ooast the coal has been taken to san franclsoo where it has been graded as no 1 free burning white ash anthracite as yet t a work which the local canadian company nave been able to do has been more of a prospeoting character than mining for the market and bo an endeavor is being made to open up the whole of this extensive coal field by the employment of villages at which the fast mail train does not stop and the postal olerks fling the mail pouch from the flying train sometimes the pouoh is heavy or unwieldy or a strong wind is blowing the pouoh falls short of the platform and is draw- nnder the wheels which grind tho let ters into a pulp in such oases the mall carrier and the train hands abend the depot would walk along the track for several rods picking np fragments and putting them in the mangled mail pouch oarry it up to the posttffijo where the posttiaster would puz zle his brain to join together suoh pieces as were decipherable and d liver to the proper persons some of the letters were only slightly wounded but many were killed be yond recognition those would form a char- red and blackened mass which the postmaster would enshroud in a stout piece of brown paper and address to that morgue of many a fond hope the dead letter offioe the moat frequent cause of this aooldent is throw ing the paokage backward instead of in the direction in which the train is moving goine over niagara the telegraph brings the report that a man is getting a barrel ready in whioh he is going over niagara falls it is somewhat early for the trip
