She then became com- mittee secretary, responsiâ€" ble for typing up council minutes, "and that’s how I ended up working for Eldred.“ When he left to become regional chairman, Tom Wood was appointed interim mayor and Winnie worked for him until the next election, when Fran Sainsbury was elected to the ofï¬ce. When she joined the town, Eldred King was mayor and she earned a princely $5 an hour. "I was quite glad iust to get back into the work force and I did whatever needed doing."
