Federal health minister and Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott has announced Health Canada has begun a process to revise Canada's Food Guide. Consultations have begun to improve the food guide to better reflect current scientific evidence on diet and health and to be more inclusive of all Canadians, including indigenous peoples. Philpott made the announcement at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal. Input is encouraged from all interested Canadians between Oct. 24 and Dec. 8, when anyone can complete an online questionnaire (www.foodguideconsultation.ca). The revision is part of the wider, multi-year Healthy Eating Strategy launched by Health Canada, which aims to "use every tool at its disposal - legislation, regulation, guidance and education - to create conditions to support healthy eating," the Health Canada statement says. Commitments include reducing intake of sodium, trans fat, sugars and food colours, while curbing marketing to children and expanding nutrition for indigenous peoples. The new commitments are in line with a recommendation laid out by the World Health Organization in 2010. "Everyone can agree that eating well, staying active and living a healthy lifestyle are important to reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes," Philpott said in a press release. "Our government's actions are aimed at ensuring positive and meaningful impacts on the overall health of Canadians for generations to come." Health Canada says four out of five Canadians are at risk of developing conditions such as cancer, heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Six out of 10 adults are overweight and one-third of Canadian youth are overweight or obese. Obesity's economic burden is estimated in the billions of dollars and greatly stresses the health care system. Poor diet is believed a primary risk factor for obesity and other chronic diseases. eneR-c ViTamin c NOVEMBER 30TH "End of the laneway fresh" OPEN EVERYDAY UNTIL 30 PaCkets 1499 pkg. WOW! 99 ea.
