26 Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, September 1, 2016 | COMING UP Motorfest revs up for Teen Challenge By ALI RAZA STK After School tAekwondo araza@yrmg.com Rev up those engines because Stouffville Motorfest is back for its 18th year on Saturday, Sept. 17. The classic and antique car event invites residents and visitors alike to feature their classic cars, enjoy live entertainment, food trucks and prizes, and fundraise for Teen Challenge GTA Women's Centre. "It's one of the largest shows in the area," said organizing committee member Paul Parsons. "It gets on a nice day in excess of 1,200 or 1,300 vehicles. It covers a whole spectrum of years, makes, models; pretty much something for everyone in terms of an interesting vehicle to look at." Last year's event saw 800 cars and $7,780 raised for Teen Challenge. In addition to fundraising for Teen Challenge, the WhitchurchStouffville Food Bank will be collecting food items at the event. Teen Challenge is a residential alcohol and drug addiction faith-based program. While offices are all across Canada, the GTA's office is located in Aurora. Stouffville-based TEVA Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. Has "graciously donated their property" for the event, Parsons says. Parsons mentioned that although the event is held in Stouffville, it attracts visitors from as far away as North Bay. When asked how car enthusiasts across the province hear about the event, Parsons largely credited word of mouth. "Our numbers have steadily grown from 25 in the first show (1998) to the best ever in 2013, which had 1,400 vehicles," Parsons said. Parsons added that "weather is the single largest factor" in determining attendance. He explained that car owners won't bring their vehicles out if it's raining or even a chance of rain, in case of damage. "The last two years we've had to use our rain date," Parsons said, hoping for better weather this year. The show is affiliated with EastRidge Evangelical Missionary Church where 50 volunteers from the congregation work during the event to help organize and run. The church is also involved with Teen Challenge. Organizers, who have raised $150,000 for Teen Challenge, hope to add another $20,000 this time, good weather permitting. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rain date is Sept. 24. Admission is free.
