18 Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, September 1, 2016 | uReport Radio voice of Spirit Jr. A hockey has made his last call "You are listening to Stouffville Spirit hockey on WhiStle FM ... high in the gondola with The Stash ..." After six year and 348 games, home and away, Rick Callaghan (AKA The Stash) is hanging up his microphone to pursue expansion of his family's automotive business. Callaghan was the Stouffville community radio station's hockey project leader and play-by-play commentator, "We have seen the Stouffville Spirit Ontario Junior Hockey League club through wins and losses, trophies and championships," he said. Callaghan has worked in the booth with Ryan Fabro (now of Sportsnet 590 THE FAN), Daryl Macklem (Sportsnet), Shawn McGovern, Brenda Masson, Luke Cameron, Tyler Vanvegel, Daniel Bertuzzi and many others. "We have travelled from Thunder Bay to Kingston and all around Ontario over the last half decade," Callaghan said. "I want to thank the OJHL's Marty Savoy and Izak Westgate, general manager Ken Burrows and his Spirit club and all the players during the last six years." He made a point of interviewing every player. "Let's face it" Callaghan said on the station's website last year, "whether these players go on to university or the "O" or even the NHL, someone from a major network is going to stick a microphone in their face and ask them some questions. They need to know how to conduct themselves with the media." Callaghan first got involved in Stouffville hockey coaching house league teams. Rick, his wife Stacey and son Calvin have operated 410 Auto on Sandiford Drive in Stouffville for more than 20 years. They are opening a second shop, Callaghan's Corners, in Beaverton. "I have had a passion to volunteer with many organization and events in Stouffville," he said. "It has been a hard decision to hang up the microphone as I have grown within the Spirit family. I will still be at games just not the voice of the game on the radio anymore. Thank you for the adventure over the last six years. We will see you around town."
