36 Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, August 25, 2016 | Brett a splash hit at Transplant Games By MICHAEL HAYAKAWA mhayakawa@yrmg.com SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands! At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with causing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don't need a doctor's referral, and there's no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself! Michael (Grey) Brett is back. Not just after he received a liver transplant in June, 2015 that gave him a second chance to live, after originally being diagnosed earlier that year with a rare auto-immune disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). But the 38-year-old Stouffville native is also back in the swim of things. Taking to the University of Toronto Athletic Centre pool at the recent 2016 Canadian Transplant Games, Brett swam in five short course events. In each, he came away with a gold medal. If that wasn't enough, Brett also set four world records. Competing in the 30-39 age group division, he won the 50-metre butterfly in a time of 31.46 seconds, eclipsing the prior mark of 31.55. In the 50m backstroke, Brett won the race in 33.75 and surpassed the previous world time of 34.98. Also swimming the 100m freestyle, he was timed in 1:03.54 and beat the prior mark of 1:13.79, while in the 200m individual medley, Brett won the race in 2:54.38 and bested the old mark of 1:13.79. Brett swam off with a fifth gold in the 50m freestyle with a time of 30.13. "Well, I'm back," he said. "That was something. What a great event." In establishing four records, Brett credited a big portion of his success to his competitive nature, having been a competitive swimmer and muay thai fighter. To prepare for the competition, he also designed his own training program and trained by himself. "As a previous competitive swimmer I knew that with a lot of hard work and training I would be able to come close to the world records," he said. "It gave me the focus I needed to transition from the most difficult experience of my life and turn it into something wonderful. While satisfied for the most part with what he accomplished in the pool, Brett also made some inroads on dry land during the competition, meeting competitors who shared similar life experiences. "It was a great time meeting and interacting with others who have gone through similar life events as me," he said. "Heart, lung, kidney and other live transplant athletes were there. It was a great time to meet and connect with them." After what he recently accomplished, Brett is now focusing on taking his swimming to a higher level by competing at the World Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain in June, 2017. To prepare for that, he intends to begin training with a masters team next month and with that, improve his swim times. In an effort to make his presence felt, he has also sought out a coach to help him prepare and to analyze what he can do better to continue to establish records. Through his participation at the recent Canadian championships, Brett also wants to raise awareness in the importance of organ donation. He recently launched a website: www.goalembassy.com and has set a goal to have 1,600 new organ donors registering.
