With training camp about to start, Stouffville Spirit co-owner and general manager Kenny Burrows felt his club required wingers with skill and speed. The Spirit addressed those needs when they acquired Andrew Hughes, 18, from the Pickering Panthers and Joseph Teofilo, 19, from the Markham Royals Tuesday, Burrows thinks. In return, the Spirit gave Markham forward Sammy Hu, 19, and goaltender Connor McCollum, 19. For Hughes, the Spirit gave Pickering cash. Making his Ontario Junior Hockey League debut last season with Pickering, the fivefoot, 11-inch, 160-pound Hughes had eight goals and 10 assists in 46 regular season tilts. A five-foot, nine-inch, 160-lb. forward from Richmond Hill, Teofilo split time last season starting with the Milton Icehawks and had 17 goals and 11 assists in 28 games before he was dealt to Markham, where he had three goals and three assists in 24 regular season contests. McCollum, who had a 3.19 goals against average and .901 save percentage in 11 regular season games last season, wanted a chance to be a No, 1 goalkeeper, Burrows said. And the Spirit were leaning toward making Aaron Taylor their starter for the upcoming season. leading scorers lost At the same time, Burrows revealed the club is in the process of signing another goalkeeper. The Spirit's top four scorers at forward from last season have all been lost to other teams this summer: Hu (Markham), Chris Brill-Morgan (Oakville), Spencer Roberts (Cobourg) and Nathan Hudgin (University of Toronto). Hu was acquired partway through last season after refusing to report to the Newmarket Hurricanes. He had 26 goals and 17 assists, but was sitting out before joining Stouffville, where he compiled 13 goals and 28 assists. Hu requested the trade. "When Sammy came to Stouffville, he asked me that he would like to go to Markham if I could arrange something," Burrows said. "And at the end of the year, he asked me again and I said I would if I can get something fair in return." As for any further transactions, Burrows hinted he would like to acquire another forward. "But it's hard to do, we'll see," he said. 5538 Bloomington Rd. "Both (Hughes and Teofilo) should be able to score and add speed and we think we've improved in that area." 140 FIRST COMMERCE DRIVE, AURORA % % 20 TO 30OFF ELECTRICAL · HEATING · LIGHTING *Offer apply to regular prices.
