She was a pillar in the Markham community as a Directress and Founder of the little red brick schoolhouse at the corner of Main Street, Unionville and Highway #7: The Montessori North School. She ran the school for thirty-five years. Fari, as she is affectionately known, was, more than anything else, warm and motherly. Not only to her two children, Minelle and Reza Mahtani, but before that to her two brothers, Farokh and Ferooz as well as so many of the children at the school. In fact, in recent years, some of the students she taught in the 1970s had come to her school to enroll their own kids, thus ensuring that Fari was teaching generations of Markham residents. Sadly, she will not have the opportunity to bond further with her grandson, Cole, the son of Minelle and Bruce Baum. Many attested to her loving and mindful nature at her memorial held at the Montessori North School on Friday February 5. Farideh had a very strong bond with the spiritual. She embraced the goodness from all religions and spiritual philosophies; goodness to her was the sum of all religious philosophies. She constantly sought ways to improve her spiritual being. In her early years, Farideh was often thwarted by the vicissitudes of life: her life took her from Iran to India, Pakistan, Iran again, Britain where she met and married Kishin Mahtani and finally Markham. Fari leaves behind many people who hold her in high regard and who will always keep her in a warm spot of their hearts. She was unfailingly gracious and it was rare to see her without a smile on her face. Fari took her final breath on the morning of Wednesday the 3rd of February, 2016 at Markham Stouffville Hospital in palliative care, where she received superlative care from the wonderful nurses who treated her with kindness and respect. He was blessed by beating all of the odds and living life to the fullest for another 22 years which included downhill and cross-country skiing, tennis, golfing, curling and many trail bike rides.
