Carrick `big shot' at AHL all-star game Before Trevor Carrick was set to go out onto the ice for a recent practice with the rest of his Charlotte Checkers teammates, he was summoned by head coach Mark Morris. What Morris said to the 21-year-old Stouffville resident was all good, as he was chosen to participate in the 2016 Toyota American Hockey League's All-Star Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. For Carrick, his participation in the contest, where he will play for the Central Division team, will be his first appearance. Needless to say the six-foot, two-inch, 186pound defenceman who played with Canada's gold-medal winning Spengler Cup team during the Christmas break is excited to be a part of the upcoming festivities that includes a Skills Competition Jan. 31 and the game. "I'm definitely looking forward to it," Carrick, fourth-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2012 NHL draft, said. "It should be pretty cool and it will be nice to meet other guys from around the league and to get my name out there. Amassing seven goals and 16 assists in 35 games during his second campaign with the Checkers thus far, Carrick said his selection to the game caught him totally off guard. "To play in the game was on the back of my mind, but you don't really think of it," the Stouffville Spirit graduate said. "There's a lot of talented players in the league that get invited. "To be chosen was an honour." Carrick will also be participating in the Skills Competition, with players from the Eastern Conference All-Star squad facing off against those from the Western Conference, in the hardest shot event. "There's some big guys in this league with lethal shots," he cited. "I don't know how I will do, but I will just bury my head and hit the puck as hard as I can." The game the following day will see the AHL All-Stars divided into four teams playing a round-robin tournament featuring six games of nine minutes each and the first half of each game played at four-on-four and second half at three-on-three and the two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament facing off for the championship, a six-minute game played at three-on-three.
