COMMUNITY Food bank needs equipment for new location BY SANDRA BOLAN sbolan@yrmg.com It's not food the Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank is currently asking for -- although the need is always there -- but help paying for equipment for the new building. The needs include retail shelving, wire dump bins, a stepladder, steel worktables, skids and milk crates. "The less money we spend on this, the more money we can spend on clients," said food bank volunteer Doug McIntyre. The total cost of the required equipment is about $8,000. The entire renovation is expected to cost roughly $40,000. Some items may be able to come from the food bank's current location, the basement of Churchill Baptist Church, but "a lot of it was handmade when (the food bank) was put in there. It's 25 years old," McIntyre said. Some shelving will not have to be purchased, as one local businessman is donating about $4,000 worth of it to the food bank, according to McIntyre, who noted, all the donor wants is return is "a small charitable receipt and bottle of wine." The food bank has a client list of about 125 families. Once it moves from north of Mus- selman's Lake to Ringwood Drive, which is in Stouffville's west end, McIntyre expects a 50 to 60 per cent increase in clients. They will now be one block from a transit route and many people will be able to walk to the new location, he reasoned. "What are the chances you could find two units like that in one area with such civicminded landlords?" Wells told The Sun-Tribune at the time. The rent is not free. They will pay $2,000 -- $1,000 to each landlord -- which includes heat, hydro and water. STOUFFVILLE NEWS ONLINE 9 | Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, January 14, 2016 yorkregion.com Inserts for Thurs., January 14, 2016 `The less money we spend on this, the more money we can spend on clients.' As part of the move, the food bank is expected to eventually transition away from using index cards for its client list and instead use a computer. "We aren't there yet. But I would hope so, everybody else is," McIntyre said. Mid-February is the target date for the food bank opening in its new location. Last November, food bank co-ordinator Marion Wells made a surprise announcement during a council meeting -- they will move into neighbouring units owned by separate landlords on Ringwood Drive. Smileville Dental owns one unit, the other is owned by SMC Project Realization and Management. Can you help? The Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank has created a wish list of items from U-Line.ca.
