Rugby girls to provincials Stouffville District Secondary School's senior girls' seven's rugby team had a strong finish to their York Region Athletic Association tier one regular season, after winning all three matches to earn a second-place finish at Alexander Mackenzie High School Tuesday. By virtue of their placement, the Spartans also secured a berth in a provincial tournament this month at Fletcher's Field. The Spartans started off the day with a 30-0 win over St. Theresa of Lisieux (Richmond Hill). Anna Horner recorded three tries while Keely Patterson, Anika Belmont and Karoline Thompson-Bruce each had one. Facing first-place Sacred Heart (Newmarket) in their second match, the Spartans handed them with their first loss of the season in a 25-15 win. Horner, Patterson and Belmont each scored one try. "They played an aggressive defence, and really executed in the tackle. We turned over many loose balls, and did a great job of controlling the ball in windy conditions," said Jim Monk, Spartans co-coach. The Spartans concluded regular season play at 4-1-4. In tier two girls' action, the Spartans won two matches over Father Bressani 20-5 and Alexander Mackenzie 15-5 and lost two against St. Jean de Brebeuf 20-15 and Dr. J.M. Denison 15-5. In boys' rugby action, the Spartan seniors defeated Keswick High School 19-7. The Spartans then lost to Bill Crothers 26-12, eventual champion St. Theresa of Lisieux 39-7 and Dr. J.M. Denison 19-5. The Spartans concluded their YRAA tier one season with a 3-9 mark. After being blanked by St. Theresa of Lisieux 30-0, the junior Spartans fell 25-5 to eventual champion Denison 25-5. But the Stouffville resident's accomplishment enabled her to be named the Ryerson Rams' Female Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 11. A Bill Crothers Secondary School graduate, who is in her second year with the 0-2 Rams, McGilvray is majoring in social work.
