8 Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, July 16, 2015 | New-look driving range could open next year at Bruce's Mill The revamped driving range at Bruce's Mill Conservation Area will hopefully open next year. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is revamping the 10 to 12-acre driving range that operated on the land until about 2013. "It was just rundown. We're trying to make it different," Joe Petta, manager of the Stouffville Road park, recently told The Sun-Tribune. The land is currently being filled and seeded. Although there is no definitive layout for the new driving range yet, Petta said it will be more than just a place to hit balls -- it will incorporate a learning centre for junior development "because that is the future". Sandra Bolan Beware of social media predators, parents: police By Jeremy Grimaldi jgrimaldi@yrmg.com Parents of young children be warned: you need to be aware of what your offspring are up to online, no matter how young they are. Those are the words of the Toronto Police officer overseeing the recent investigation into accused social media predator Brandon Walker of Richmond Hill. The 24-year-old allegedly used his Facebook account to gain nude photos and videos of young girls. Once in possession of the images, police allege Walker, who used the name Brandon G. Davidson on his Facebook site, used them to extort the girls into further acts, by threatening to release them onto social media. Toronto Police fear there are many more victims out there. The pornography charges against Walker come on the back of another case of alleged "sextortion" in Whitchurch-Stouffville, in which Mark Viscomi allegedly gained nude photos of a girl in the United States, only to use the threat of releasing them to her parents to convince her to sexually abuse her own sister. In both cases the girls were 13 or 14. The former Preston Lake resident is currently fighting extradition to the United States to face those charges with the possibility of life behind bars if he's found guilty. "The fact that he knew the ages of the victims and was (allegedly) using that vulnerability, as well as their innocence, is very malicious, but all too frequent," said Toronto Police Det. Const. Michele Bond, referring to the Walker case. She said in the past three years she and the other investigators in the child exploitation unit have seen an explosion in the number of youngsters willfully posting nude pictures onto the Internet only for those images to be used against them. "Teens that are offering nude pictures need to step back, because they could find themselves in situations like this one," she added. "It's very prevalent. We as parents wouldn't let our kids go to Vaughan Mills alone, so why do we let them online alone? ... if we have teens, we need to keep that door open, this is parenting in the 21st century."
