Stouffville 905-642-9864 Markham Fair A Fall Tradition our community Markham Fair, which takes place Oct. 1 to 4 at Markham Fairgrounds, is a welcome harbinger of fall in Established in 1844 to enable local farmers to showcase their livestockand produce, the fair has remained faithful to its agricultural roots while offering entertainment and fun for the whole family. Friendly competition is a big component, with approximately 3,000 exhibitors entering more than 12,000 items to be judged and displayed during the four day event, among them giant pumpkins, hand made quilts, artwork, preserves and pies. From animal displays and live entertainment to midway rides, the fair caters to people of all ages and interests. Markham Fair is a joint venture between the towns of Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville and is the largest community-based volunteer organization in- Canada, involving more than 670 volunteers and 70 committees and attracting more than 60,000 visitors annually. This year's president, Stouffville resident Karen Margaret Murphy, grew up on the Paisley family farm and has been involved in the fair since 1975, the year her parents entered her in the baby contest. Highlights for 2009 include horse shows, sheep shearing, freestyle moto-cross, displays by the Toronto Police mounted unit, a 4-H tractor pull and the Stars of Pop tribute show to Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers and Hilary Duff. Markham Fairgrounds are on McCowan Rd. at Elgin Mills (18th Ave.) and there is plenty of free parking available. You can also take advantage of the shuttle bus service which will piCk up passengers in Stouffville and drop them off at the fairgrounds throughout the weekend.
