Stouffville Sun-Tribune n www.yorkregion.com n Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, 10 Doc, dinner honouring longtime town doctors BY SANDRA BOLAN sbolan@yrmg.com The new generation of area doctors have a lot of experience to draw on, as their predecessors and in a couple of cases, current colleagues, have a combined 300 years and counting worth of practising to their credit. The old guard -- doctors John Button, Donald Smith, Douglas Brodie, Donald Petrie, Glenn Graham and Markham's Dr. Jack White -- will be honoured Oct. 19 at The Pillars - Celebrating Family Medicine Heritage in Stouffville. "Back in that time, the physicians did everything. ... It's quite different from now," said Allan Bell, director of corporate sponsorship and special events for the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation. The event is also a fundraiser for the foundation. "It's such a growing community. It's important to support the hospital that is growing to meet the needs of the community," Mr. Bell said. "How thrilled we are to be the recipient of such a great event." The evening also includes the debut of a documentary featuring the honourees and the launch of a book on Brierbush Hospital by former Sun-Tribune Citizen of the Year Dr. Petrie. The hospital was located where Spring Street now runs in east-end Stouffville. "I've been reading it. It's pretty amazing," Mr. Bell said. The event was also created "to uphold the heritage of caring that is a hallmark of a great family physician," according to material put out by the organizing committee, which includes Dr. Petrie, doctors Jane Philpott and Sarah Barclay and Councillor Rob Hargrave. There are about 200 seats available and tickets go on sale Sept. 15 for $100 each. You can order them by calling 905-472-7373 ext. 6341. The event is being held at Stouffville's Royal Canadian Legion, 150 Mostar St. Dr. Donald Petrie will be one of Stouffville's doctors honoured at a dinner next month.
