C e n t r e to o m u c h f o r c o u n c i l l o r Seniors boo council for putting off move BY SANDRA BOLAN sbolan@yrmg.com A chorus of boos rang out as WhitchurchStouffville council voted four to two in favour of deferring the seniors' centre move into town hall, while staff investigate all other reasonable options, including an interim solution. "That's a bummer," noted one senior as she left the packed council chamber following 90 minutes of discussion on the facility. "Wait until they get to be seniors," said another disappointed elder attendee. About 140 seniors packed the council chamber, with more in the hallway watching the presentation by Rob Raycroft, director of leisure and community services for the town, on a big-screen TV, which detailed the adaptive re-use of the municipal building's vacant space and the 55 Plus Club's move into it. "There isn't a facility in town I can think of that would suit our needs," said Wilf Morley, president of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Silver Jubilee 55 Plus Club. Mr. Morley, a former councillor, also noted by researching alternative sites now, it could take another two to three years before another one is found. "Think about it, council, 2014 is an election year. I don't mean it as a threat," Mr. See LEISURE, page 22.
