( om With a month to go, United Way of York Region is within $2.1 million of its record 2010 campaign goal. 'l‘o date. $5.9 million, or 74 per cent, towards the EBBâ€"million target has been raised, United Way 2010 campaign cabinet chairper- son Bruce Macgregor announced Monday at Pathways for Children, Youth and Families of York Region lnc. “This is a detemiined group ofsenior volun- teers," Mr. Macgregor said of the 26 corporate leaders that make up his cabinet. “There is no slowing down. Not in the ï¬nal stretch. Not in the face of the need we have seen and the sto- ries we have heard from people touched by United Way across the region. “The goal is in reach. We can do this with everyone's help and participation. United, we can provide much needed supports to the one in three people who reach out to United Way funded programs each year in our region." Host organization Pathways chairperson Rob Spence validated the need. “We have been in the business of inspir- ing and empowering young people in crisis to turn their lives around for two decades,†he said. There has never been this level of vul- nerability in York Region with young people and their parents reaching out for a helping hand, including counsel- ling programs, shelter beds or transitional housing, Mr. Spence said. Pathways served more than l,l()() youth regionwide this year, Mr. Spence said. United Way chief executive officer Daniele lanotti deï¬ned the campaign as one of vul- nerability and determination. He cited vulnerable families struggling to make ends meet since a bread earner was laid ohâ€, a vulnerable teen caught between deâ€" pression, suicide and trying to ï¬nd sen/ices close to home, a vulnerable mom and her twins waiting for that right time to run from abuse and a vulnerable senior, living alone and unable to care for them self any longer.
