It seems like only ye sterday, Madeleine (Maddy) Eddy was light- ing up the sanctuary of St. James Presbyterian Church with her pervad- ing eyes and infectious smile. How could anyone know that behind this exterior glow might some day emerge a voice so superb, audiences would listen in wonder? That time is now. Tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., this 18-year-old prodigy will illumiâ€" nate the auditorium of Stouffville District Sec- ondary School. It's the 18th annual Student Music Scholar- ship Concert, an evening devoted entirely to vocal and instrumental talent from six Whitchurch- Stouffville schools. As part of the program, one student will receive a $200 scholarship. Madeleine Eddy is this year’s choice. Previous recipients have _ been Georgina Muir, Clara Jordan, Joc- elyn McDowell, Cameron MacKenzie, Kathryne Irwin, Carley MacLean, Lillian Wild, Jennifer Thu- nem, Kirstie Hembruff, Aaron Clubine and AJ. deBoer. Rev. Kathryn Strachan, pastor of St. James, will make the presentation. A resident of Glasgow, northeast of Stouffville, Maddy received her ele- mentary education at Goodwdod Public School There, she received tw( music awards. It was while attend- ing Uxbridge Secondary School Maddy spread her wings. In three appearances at the Sunderland Music Festival, she was the recipient of 13 ï¬rsts in vocal and piano presen- tations. In addition, she received four golds at the Pickering GTA festival. This advanced her to the provincial ï¬nals at lerid Laurier University. Prodigy headlines student concert Despite a busy schedule, Maddy’s been extremely generous with her vocal gifts, singing at many churches in the Stouffville-Uxbridge area as well as participat- ing in several fundrais- ers for the Lucy Maude Montgomery Society, in Leaskdale and Toronto. and the Terry Fox Run in ow time flies Stouffville. In February. she has a role in the production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Uxbridge. Roaming Around Her vocal instructor is Jennifer Neveu Cook. Her piano teacher is Anthony Holt. Both are in Uxbridge. Maddy knows the frustrations that come with success but refuses to abandon her dreams. “I may give up on a particular selection but never on an ambition," she says. “Singing is what I love. I’ll never stop." Maddy‘s full of praise for support received from her parents, Kim McGuire and Tom Eddy. While music takes up much of her time, Maddy also works at the Stouffville IDA. Schools and direc- tors taking part include St. Mark choir, (Susan Whitebread); Stouffville Christian flute ensem- ble, (Claire Dederer); Whitchurch Highlands band, (Jennifer Frans); Ballantrae choir, (Ingrid Legros); Summitview Choir, (Marigo Batzia- cas); Stouffville Second- ary School band, (Diane Marlatt) and Stouffville District Secondary School choir. (Miriam Seliick- Smith). Over the past 17 years, more than $70,000 has been raised, with all receipts returned to parâ€" ticipating schools to assist their music programs. The area business and service club communities have provided outstand- ing support. The event is hosted by St. James Presbyterian Church, Stouffville.
