Program co-ordinator Marlene Berry of York Region Street Outreach says it’s unfortu- nate some atâ€"risk people still don’t realize the van provides food, clothing, sleeping bags, a needle exchange and other essential services on its weekly visits to town. “We're definitely meeting a need here," Ms Berry said during a recent afternoon run. “But many of the folks we’re ofiering service to in Stouflville tell us that there are not enough people in the area aware of this. They say more people would use us if they knew about it.” Ms Berry, who operates the distinctive black and orange vehicle along with stafi including a social services worker and public health nurse, promotes the service largely by word of mouth. She urged anyone who is homeless or street-involved â€" as well as anyone who knows of someone needing this kind of help â€" to contact the service anytime toll-free at 1-866-553-4053. “Our program provides a critical link between our clients and the services they need.
