To ï¬ght in Ontario is some- thing I haven’t been able to do since I wrestled in university. This has been something that we (mixed martial arts competitors and fans of the sport) have hoped for over the last 10 years and although it’s been a long process it will be well worth the wait.†Pierson anticipates he and other ï¬ghters from the GTA will receive additional opportu- nities to take to the octagon in circuits that will expand their matches within the province. Currently signed to compete with Bellaâ€" tor, an international series, Pierson has been approached to ï¬ght in two other Canadian- based circuits known as W1 and Wreck Starting next year, though, Pierson is expected to fulï¬ll his wish after the proVincial government announced Saturday it will lift the ban on mixed martial arts in 2011. “I still thought we were another six months to a year off from making it happen and I ï¬g- ured there would have been a big announce- ment," the welterweight said. BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA mllayakawa@yrmg.com They say patience can be a virtue. Sean Pierson certainly has been patient. Especially since in the 10 years the 34-year- old Stouffville resident been involved in mixed martial arts he’s never been able to showcase his ï¬ghting skills in Ontario. Nor has he been able to do it in front of his immediate family and friends. StouffVille MMA ï¬ghter pumped for home dates “But poorly run shows could have the opposite effect." “It will allow more fans of the sport to watch the events live and experience the atmosphere of the event itself,†Pierson said. “I think if promoters run their show well it could increase the popularity. “Local athletes will be able to develop themselves before taking large jumps in com- petition which will in turn drive the skill level of the athletes up,†Pierson said. “Most importantly for athletes such as myself, I believe this will open the door for sponsor- ships, which could allow me to focus more on competing.†Citing the popularity of mixed martial arts is currently at a high, Pierson feels the prov- ince’s decision to lift the ban is akin to adding icing on the cake. But he warned it would depend on how promoters handle their shows. “There will deï¬nitely be a lot more oppor- tunities for Ontario competitors to compete now as the number of local shows will have a strong need for local talent and will look to build these ï¬ghters to showcase their shows," he said. Mth a new market cropping up, Pierson said it would also create openings for new ï¬ghters to make their debut. In turn, that is expected to further elevate the competitive level and possibly entice new sponsors to become involved.
