But if the next eight weeks of training go well, I’m daring to dream of hitting 12 hours. Employed by a pharmaceutical consult- ing company when he's not training, Jam- jekian acknowledges his weaknesses. “I’m not a naturally gifted long distance athlete and my swimming ability, or lack of ability, was limited to doggy paddling. I’m an OK mountain biker, but never tried road biking before," he said. “Needless to say, my goal is to finish the race. “Of course disaster can strike very eas- ily at these events too, so 14 hours wouldn't surprise me either,” he said. And to do it within a specified time would be a bonus. To cross the finish line, he said, would be an accomplishment. “To do an ironman event had always been in the back of my mind as the ultimate goal," he said. “I felt like I would regret it if I never tried. So when registration opened up for the Ironman Lake Placid I tried signing up. I didn't expect to get in because it's sort of lottery based. I tried last year and wasn’t successful. But when I saw the registration go through this year I felt like ‘whoa, what just happened? I guess I have to buy a bike now.’ I was in a mild state of shock for about a week,” he added with a laugh. Making his debut in this gruelling com- petition, which includes a 2.4-mile swim, llZ-mile bike course and a 26-mile run, lamjekian is looking forward to the chal- lenge. These days, he’s diligently preparing to embark on another adventurous outing - an ironman competition. It's not just any ironman event. He’ll be in Lake Placid, N .Y., July 25 to swim, cycle and run at the high-profile 2010 Ford Ironman Lake Placid. During the past 10 years, the 31-year- old Stouffville resident has participated in adventure racing, marathons and mountain biking. Armen Jamjekian enjoys going on an out- door adventure. Acknowledging that asking for donations isn’t something he's comfortable in doing, lamjekian said within a couple of weeks of announcing his intentions he’s close to reaching the halfway point of his goal. “I've been truly touched by everyone that has supported the cause," he said. “His story is a long one that still brings tears to our eyes. I spent the last night of his life with him. It was a Tuesday night. At 8 am. I left his side to go to work. I rushed back from work, planned on having dinner and going back to see him. But I basically fell asleep where I was sitting from exhaus- tion. The phone then rang and it was my father letting me know that Uncle Mike had passed away. “I just kept yelling ‘why couldn't I do any- thing to help?’ “On March 18, 2008, my Uncle Mike passed away from Multiple Sclerosis. It was a 20-year battle. He was a fun-loving guy that we all loved very much," Iamjekian said. “Our family had never truly experienced the loss of someone so close in such a harowing way. money for tho; Multiple Sclerosis Society.
