The Clan will be called to order to meet April 10th. In the meantime, in lieu of flowers. ifts. etc., we would ask a donation in the name of Joan aryaret Bell be made to ABC Life Literacy Canada, 4211 Yonge Street, Suite 235, Toronto, Ontario, MZP 2A9. This would be an outstanding show of support. Joan wanted every one of us to know the power of reading a book and writing a poem. She thought that this was the clue to solving all the problems in the world. Hard to argue with that. Joan will find her final resting place in either England, Jamaica, Samia, Goodwood, Beaverton or Sundridge, Ontario. BELL, Joan M. ~ it is with real sadness the we announce that Joan Margaret Bel (nee Rogers) passed away peacefully with family close by in the Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay, Ontario, on the 18th day of March, 2010. Joan was just a few weeks shy of her 89th birthday. She suffered a major stroke the week before her death. She was never alone and fought a terrific battle which you would come to expect from someone raisin children in her early 20‘s in London, England during WW . In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public memorial service and the family around the world will be called to gather as a clan at the home of her son Donny in Guelph on Saturday April 10th, her 89th birthday to celebrate her life. Joan was all about family and she was the gentle hum in the room that kept everyone together Joan was born in Shepperton, England on the outskirts of London in 1921. She was a gifted only child who grew up determined her children had siblings. She succeeded on all accounts passing on traits of a keen intellect with a love of music, dance and literature to ï¬ve children, eleven grand children and to date seven reat grandchildren. In amongst this group are some 20 niversity and College Degrees. Joan married Donald Charles Bell in 1940 at Shepperton. Donald at the time worked at the Shepperton Film Studios where his Father, Percy, was a founding partner and General Manager. Both Don and Joan are now heroes to their children. Joan kept a developin family safe during the war and the bombing of London, ngland and Donald was a flight engineer (co-pilot) in 3 Lancaster, Bomber for the RAF who flew countless missions in his early 20's. No one can truly appreciate what this was like for both of them. Nowadays, new couples worry about china patterns and honey moons. In 1940, it was life and death. Don's exploits resulted in him being shot down over Germany just after the birth of their second son David in 1943. Donald survived the war as a POW in Stalag Luff 3. He walked home across Poland after being liberated by the Americans and joined Joan in London. After the war Joan, Donald, and now a daughter Diana, along with the two sons Peter and David, emigrated from England to Jamaica. Donald worked at yet another of his Father's ventures: The Bellrock (Gypsum) Company. In 1951, the five Bells emigrated again. this time from Jamaica to Sarnia, Ontario. Here the family increased to seven with the birth of two more boys: Denny and Doug. Joan had achieved both numbers and nationalities for her children. By 1969, Joan and Donald had realized a long-standing ambition to run their own business. They became owners/ proprietors of the Goodwood General Store and Post Office in Goodwood, Ontario. “Bell's Store“, as it was known, became a social 'tradin post' for rural residents between Uxbridge and Stouffvil e, Ontario. in addition to Merchants, the Bell's were Post Master General, banker, conï¬dent, ï¬nancial advisor and just plain friend for a farm community where the next cheque for crops or livestock was six months away. In 20 years they never charged a penny of interest and made sure their farm friends and customers were well through the long winters. This was the environment where their two Canadian boys grew up and married. Joan and Donald retired from the store in the 1980's, saying goodbye to hundreds of friends and happy customers. They relocated to Beaverton, Ontario at Maple Beach on Lake Simcoe. Once again they established many wonderful friendships and 'happy customers': This time by running Seniors. Line Dancing Classes, for Oshawa, Uxbridge, Beaverton and by winter extension, the town of Panama City Beach Florida during 4 months of the winter. Joan loved to do the Boot Scooting 800 ie. Joan and Donald have been dancing together since t eir ï¬rst meeting at the age of 17. They were forced to take a final bow in 2001 due to Donald's illness. This didn’t stop their regular outings to join in with their Beaverton McDonald's morning coffee group. in 2008, they became residents of the Lakeview Manor, Long Term Care Facility, in Beaverton, Ontario, where Donald still resides to date. Jean is survived b3 her Husband Donald (70th Anniversary July 13, 2 102’ still trying to escape to better things, Daughter Diana urnell (Sarnia), Sons: Peter London), David (Peterborou h), Donald Jr. Guelph), ouglas (Lindsay) and by her isters in Law: E sie Smith (Barrie), Jill Cottrell (UK), by Her Brother in Law: Robert (UK), by Her Daughters in Law: Monica (Guelph), Teresa (Lindsay) and Teresa (London) and by 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Family finances prevented Joan from attending university in 1930's. She quietly but very proudly has established a growing legacy of professionals in Engineering, Commerce, Law, Management, Conservational Biology, Music, Hospitality, Health Sciences, Business, Industrial Design, -__L_._-A:__ ?L_ Ale .1.
