At eight months old, Chiara Pinna’s little body, without warn- ing, began to writhe and con- vulse uncontrollably. Once the seizure was over, what remained was a little girl with her intellectual and physical capabilities frozen in time. Within hours of the seizure. doctors in France, where the family is from, diagnosed Chiara with West Syndrome, which is a rare form of epilepsy that occurs predominantly in a child's ï¬rst year of life. . For a year-and-a-half, Chiara took anti-seizure medication and did physiotherapy once or twice a week to help re-awaken the connection between her brain and muscles.
