BY MIKE HAYAKAWA Staff Writer The Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans senior boys' rugby team lost its friendly to the Robert Clack School from Dagenham, England, 12-10 at Stouï¬ville District Secondary School Sunday. “That’s what the fall season is all about," Hewitt said. “Our kids learned how to play in a big game. Rugby is a contact sport and you never know when players might get hurt and now I know some of our young guys can step in and play.†Arï¬dng those new faces th stood out were fly half Jesse Lofthouse, who replaced injured Matt Raguseo and scored the Spartans’ lone try in the ï¬rst half. Another strong performance came from the David Gregory, a Grade 11 student who played with the junior team last year but did not start Gregory booted a con- vert and penalty kick to give the Spartans a 10-7 lead before Robert Clack scored a late try to win the match. Spartans head coach Iamie Hewitt said the ï¬nal outcome wasn’t important. He was proud of the way his charges performed in the closely contested match played before a large crowd. Added to that, the Spartans played the game with- out several starters from last year’s senior team that captured the Ontario high school AA title. Most encouraging to Hewitt was the manner in which several ï¬rstâ€"year seniors seized the opportunity to show they could compete against a team that takes the game very seriousiy. r In an earlier match, the Spartans bantams dropped a 35â€"10 decision to the Robert Clack School.
