CLOSING, ANNIVERSARY MARKED He reminds students and parents the board will continue to update the progress through articles with The Sun- Tribune. “Parents and students can look for- ward to an exciting school year in a brand new building." Orchard Park will mark its SOth anni- versary and Closing with its final annual fun fairiMay 24 from 10 am. to 2 pm. Staff, students, parents, graduates and former teachers are invited. Another new school, Harry Bowes Public in northeast Stouffville, is also scheduled to open in September. “There are tight schedules involved in getting schools built,” he said. “We have hada number of occasions where the occupancy permits for new schools were granted in the days and weeks prior to the start of school. It’s just one of the challenges of working with growing school environments and growing com- munities." ‘ Despite the delays, Mr. Virgo said res- idents should anticipate a fall start. The school is named for the Cana- dian jazz giant who died late last year. OSCAR PETERSON PUBLIC “Often schools run behind on con- struction," he said. “We’re still optimistic for the opening at the beginning of the school year (2008-2009).” Approximately 520 students from Orchard Park Public School, which is scheduled to close in June, as well as Glad Park are expected to attend the new school. . Running slightly behind on construcâ€" tion has happened before and the build- ers have managed to get back on track, Mr. Vugo said. In the unlikely event the school was not completed, students would likely remain at Orchard Park until the new building was finished, Mr. Virgo said. BY ALYSHIA HIGGINS Construction of a new public school in west-end Stouffville is slightly behind, but workers and the school board are optimistic it will be finished on time. Ross Virgo, spokesperson for the York Region District School Board, said the board and builders are hoping Oscar Peterson Public School will be ready to open its doors in time for classes in the fall. The school, slated to be open Sep- tember 2008, is being built on Hoover Park Drive, near Mostar Street.
