This Saturday marks Earth Hour, an event started Australia to raise awareness of glob- alwarmmg. More than 2.2 million Australians shut oï¬â€™ their lights for one hour last year, saving 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide fnom enter- ing the atmosphere. vThis year: the movement has spread beyond the borders of Australia to Canada, the United States and some European counâ€" VVhitchurch-Stouffville jumped on the Earth Hour band wagon in February and plans to turn off all available lights, according to Mayor Wayne Emmerson. “Wherever possible we’re going to do our best to accommodate Earth Hour,†Mr. Emmerson said. “I also ask residents to abide by it as well and do their best to conserve." 7 Mr. Emmerson also added that every hour should be Earth Hour and all residents should be doing their best to “conserve energy when- ever possibleâ€. Other municipalities participating in the event, which runs from 8 to 9 pm, include Markham, Newmarket and Vaughan. While there has been letters to the editor of The Sun-Tribune concerning the munici- pal ofï¬ce lights being left on late at night. Mr. Emmerson said the building owner has installed timers to switch the lights off at night in order to save energy. “We’ve gone one step further and actu- ally went and put timers in our ofï¬ce here," said Mr. Emerson. “Sometimes we do have people here cleaning, but when there's no one here, the lights switch off at night and come back on in the morning."
